1.4 and 1.6 TU3/TU5 engine: faults and reliability

PSA 1.4 TU3 and 1.6 TU5 (motores TU, 8v and 16v) · Peugeot and Citroën

The TU is one of PSA's most widely built petrol engines: more than 15.6 million units between 1986 and 2014. It is simple (no turbo, no direct injection or particulate filter, belt-driven timing) and has a reputation for durability. The faults owners cite most are cheap wear parts -ignition coils, sensors and thermostat- and not block failures or cylinder head design flaws.[1][2][3][4]

Which 1.4 and 1.6 TU3/TU5 versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • TU3 1.4 75 hp 8v (TU3JP/TU3KFX, 1994-2014)

    1994–2014 · 75 hp · TU3JP, TU3KFX

    Buy

It is the simplest version, with the least electronics in the whole family: with no turbo or direct injection, its most cited faults according to owners (coil, sensors) are cheap to repair and do not compromise the engine if dealt with in time.[2][3]

  • TU5 1.6 88-90 hp 8v (TU5JP, from 1994)

    1994–2005 · 88–90 hp · TU5JP

    Buy

It shares the mechanical simplicity of the 1.4: no turbo or complex electronics, with the advantage of a little more power and torque for getting around town and on the road with ease.[6][7]

  • TU5 1.6 16v 109-112 hp (TU5JP4/TU5NFU, from 2000)

    1999–2010 · 109–112 hp · TU5JP4, TU5NFU

    Buy

It is the most powerful version in the family and the one that appears most in head gasket and coil faults in the report compilations consulted, but these are still cheap repairs compared with a turbo or diesel engine of the same era.[2][3][4]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 1.4 and 1.6 TU3/TU5

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: OccasionalCylinder head and blockHead gasket damaged after overheatingThe head gasket fails mainly as a consequence of previous overheating -from a coolant leak or a faulty thermostat- and not as a factory defect: it appears in a minority of engines, almost always between 30,000 and 180,000 km, with coolant loss, emulsified oil or white smoke.Appears at around 30,000 km
  2. 2Medium severityFrequency: CommonIgnitionIgnition coils that fail and cause jerkingThe ignition module -a rail with two twin coils, no distributor- is the electrical fault owners cite most across all models with this engine: it usually fails between 40,000 and 150,000 km and causes jerking, an unstable idle or the engine warning light coming on.Appears at around 40,000 km
  3. 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingThermostat stuck open or closedThe thermostat -the controlled "calorstat" on the more recent versions- can stick: if it closes, the engine overheats; if it stays open, it is slow to reach temperature and uses more fuel. It is one of the cooling faults owners of these engines cite most.
  4. 4Low severityFrequency: CommonElectronicsSensors that fail: lambda sensor and temperature sensorThe lambda sensor and the coolant temperature sensor are, along with the coils, the components most cited as faulty: they cause an unstable idle, the engine warning light coming on or a cooling fan that does not behave normally.Appears at around 25,000 km
  5. 5Low severityFrequency: CommonLubricationOil leak from the rocker cover gasketThe rocker cover gasket dries out with the years and lets oil seep into the spark plug wells: besides the oil stain on the engine, it can soak the spark plugs or the ignition module and cause misfires.Appears at around 120,000 km

What the 1.4 and 1.6 TU3/TU5 is

The TU engine was born in 1986 with the Citroën AX, replacing the old X engine, and stayed in production until 18 December 2014: more than 28 years and 15.6 million units built across petrol and diesel versions. Within the family, the 1,360 cc TU3 and the 1,587 cc TU5 -which are the ones covered on this page, in their 1.4 and 1.6 versions- share their architecture with the rest of the TU engines, and the TU5 was introduced in March 1994.[1][5]

They are naturally aspirated four-cylinder in-line engines with belt-driven (not chain-driven) timing. The TU5 block is cast iron with an aluminium cylinder head. Both were first offered with a single camshaft and 8 valves -75 hp for the 1.4 and 88-90 hp for the 1.6- and later with a second camshaft and 16 valves, with which the 1.6 reached 109-112 hp; this 16-valve version of the 1.6 was introduced around the year 2000, first in the Citroën Xsara.[5][6][7]

In Spain it was fitted above all in whole generations of Peugeot and Citroën superminis and compacts: the Peugeot 206, the 207 (as the entry-level engine, with the rest of the range already switched to the new VTi units) and the 307, and the Citroën Xsara, Xsara Picasso, C2, C3 and C4 (again only in the entry-level versions, while the higher-spec 1.4 moved to the new ET3). It also powered vans and family MPVs such as the first-generation Peugeot Partner and Citroën Berlingo, which their manufacturers kept in the catalogue as the 'Partner Origin' and 'Berlingo First' alongside the second generation (B9, 2008-2018), which no longer used this engine.[6][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]

Unlike later PSA engines such as the 1.2 PureTech or the 1.6 THP, the owner-report compilations on Fiches-auto.fr for these models show neither manufacturer campaigns nor repeated cases of internal engine failure, even in units with several hundred thousand kilometres: what recurs most are wear parts -coils, sensors, thermostat and gaskets- and, in a minority of cases, a damaged head gasket almost always after a previous cooling problem.[2][3][4][16][17][18]

What changed between versions

  1. 1994–2014

    TU3 1.4 75 hp 8v (TU3JP/TU3KFX, 1994-2014)

This is the entry-level version of the whole family: a single camshaft, 8 valves and multipoint injection. It stayed almost unchanged as the entry engine for Peugeot and Citroën for two decades, even when the rest of each model's range was already using more modern engines (VTi, THP, ET3).[5][6][15]

  2. 1994–2005

    TU5 1.6 88-90 hp 8v (TU5JP, from 1994)

Capacity rises to 1,587 cc from the TU3's 1,360 cc to give a little more power and torque while keeping a single camshaft and 8 valves; it was introduced in March 1994 as a middle option between the entry-level 1.4 and the 16-valve versions.[1][6][7]

  3. 1999–2010

    TU5 1.6 16v 109-112 hp (TU5JP4/TU5NFU, from 2000)

Adds a second camshaft and 16 valves to raise output to 109-112 hp. It debuted around the year 2000 in the Citroën Xsara, and from there passed to the rest of the Peugeot and Citroën range, including vans such as the Peugeot Partner.[6][7][8]
