Renault 1.0 SCe (B4D)Ignition coils and spark plugsEngine sensors
Jerking, rough idle or warning light from sensors and ignition coils on the 1.0 SCe (B4D)
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency occasional: On the Renault Twingo III (SCe 70), fiches-auto.fr records 5 cases of sensors/lambda sensors and 2 of ignition (coils) out of 86 reviews; on the Dacia Sandero II (SCe 75), 1 injection case out of 20; on the Dacia Logan II (SCe 75), 1 sensor case out of 7 reviews, as well as describing in general terms "jerking, flat spots in acceleration and engine management defects". The recurrence across the three cars, always in a minority of cases, justifies classifying it as occasional.[1][2][3]
Symptoms
- Engine fault warning light on, associated in the documented cases with the lambda sensor or the ignition coil.[3]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Jerking or flat spots in acceleration at low revs, described by Dacia Logan II owners as defects of the electronic engine management.[2]Jerking: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
The sources attribute the symptom to sensor faults (lambda sensor), ignition coil faults or a coarse interpretation by the control unit of the air-fuel mixture at low revs, without always detailing the exact component in each case.[2][3]
If it is not repaired: In the documented cases the problem shows up as uneven running, jerking or the engine fault warning light on, resolved by replacing the affected sensor or coil; no major engine damage is described.[3]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis and replacement of the affected sensor (lambda sensor) or ignition coil.[3]
We have not found a published quote in Spain for this diagnosis on this particular engine.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- During the test drive, accelerate gently at low revs and check that there is no jerking and that the engine fault warning light is not on.
Parts needed
The part or kit that fixes this fault, according to the sources.
Lambda sensor
Replaced if it causes jerking, a warning light or uneven consumption through an incorrect reading of the mixture.
Ignition coil
Replaced if it causes misfires or the engine to run unevenly.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the 1.0 SCe jerk?
The sources consulted link it to sensor faults (lambda sensor), ignition coils or the electronic engine management at low revs.[2][3]
Is it a problem with the engine block?
No: in the sources consulted it is described as a fault of peripheral components (sensors, coils), not of the engine block itself.[3]
What can you do now?

Other 1.0 SCe (B4D) faults
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalClutchClutch that slips or judders, especially when coldThe 1.0 SCe can have a clutch that slips or judders, especially with a cold engine. It is the issue that recurs most in the sources consulted, documented independently on the Sandero II, the Logan II and the Twingo III, without being described as a fault that damages the engine.
- Low severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationHigher-than-normal oil consumption (especially on the Dacia Sandero II)The Dacia Sandero II with the 1.0 SCe can use more oil than normal, with one documented case of 750 ml every 5,000 km; on the Dacia Logan II and the Renault Twingo III with the same engine this problem is not described in a comparable proportion.
- Low severityFrequency: RareTimingChain-driven timing: no documented pattern of faultsUnlike engines with a timing belt, the 1.0 SCe barely records any mentions of the timing in the sources consulted: 1 case out of 117 combined reviews of the Sandero II, the Logan II and the Twingo III, with no further detail. It is not a fault that we can document as a pattern on this engine.
More faults with the ignition coils on other engines and cars
- Medium severityFrequency: Very frequent1.4 and 1.6 16vIgnition coil failureThe individual ignition coils are the most-cited fault of the K4J/K4M in the European Renault versions: they fail frequently and cause jerking, loss of power and the engine warning light coming on. It is a cheap electrical part to replace, not internal engine damage.Appears at around 30,000 km
- High severityFrequency: Occasional1.2 PureTechSpark plug breakage on the 130 hp 1.2 PureTech turboOn the 130 hp 1.2 PureTech/e-THP turbo the original spark plugs can break; if a fragment falls into the cylinder it can damage the engine. Autojournal cites a 2015 recall to replace them on the 308 II.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonBMW N43/N46Injector, ignition coil and NOx sensor failures (N43)On the direct-injection BMW N43, failures of the injectors, ignition coils (mainly in 2007-2008 units, now rare after a BMW service action) and the NOx sensor of its lean-burn combustion have been documented. The indirect-injection N46 does not have that sensor and does not suffer these failures.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonBMW N54/N55Oil in the spark plug wells from the rocker cover gasketOn the N54 and N55 the rocker cover gasket hardens with age and lets oil seep into the spark plug wells. Guides treat it as a known fault: it smells of burnt oil and can damage spark plugs and coils.
- Medium severityFrequency: Common1.0/1.2/1.4 EcotecIgnition coil failureThe ignition coils on this engine fail fairly often in the Corsa, Astra, Meriva and Adam, causing jerking, the engine warning light and, in the clearest cases, the engine running on one cylinder fewer; the garage fixes it by replacing the affected coil.Repair (garage): €150–€480Appears at around 15,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: Common1.4 TurboIgnition coil failureThe ignition coils of the 1.4 Turbo fail fairly often on the Mokka and Meriva B, with jerking, occasional loss of power and the engine warning light on; the garage fixes it by replacing the affected coil or coils.Repair (garage): €400–€600Appears at around 47,000 km
