Toyota 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV)Particulate filter (DPF/FAP)
Clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF) on the 1.4 D-4D
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency common: Documented on the second-generation Yaris (five cases) and the Auris (six out of seventy-two reports, often linked to oil consumption that ends up fouling the filter); we have not found the exact year in which Toyota began fitting the filter as standard on this engine in Europe, so we do not limit this fault to a specific version.[1][2]
Symptoms
- The particulate filter warning light comes on when the DPF is saturated with soot and cannot regenerate.[1]DPF warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- The car loses power and limits the revs when the filter is badly clogged.[2]Less power: other faults that cause it · Monitor
Why it happens
The filter needs to reach a high enough exhaust temperature to burn off the accumulated soot (regeneration); short or urban trips do not always reach it and the filter gradually clogs.[1]
On the Auris, several owners link the filter clogging to earlier oil consumption, which ends up fouling it faster than normal.[2]
If it is not repaired: A badly clogged filter that cannot regenerate can end up completely blocked, forcing a replacement that is considerably more expensive than a clean or a forced regeneration.[2]
Affected cars and years
It only affects units with a standard-fit particulate filter, which Toyota added in the engine's last years of production to meet the Euro 5 standard; the older versions, without a filter, cannot suffer this fault.[1][2][3]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis and forced regeneration of the filter at the workshop; does not include complete replacement if it can no longer be regenerated.[2]
One Auris owner reports a complete filter replacement at 236,000 km without giving the cost; there are no official rates published in Spain.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Ask whether the DPF warning light has ever come on and whether the car mostly does short trips.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)
Traps soot from the exhaust; replaced when it can no longer regenerate.

How to prevent it
- Make a long run on an A-road or motorway from time to time so the filter can regenerate normally.
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Do all versions of the engine have a particulate filter?
No: Toyota added it in the last years of production to meet the Euro 5 standard; the older units do not have one and cannot suffer this particular fault.[3]
Can it be cleaned instead of replaced?
A forced regeneration at the workshop usually resolves moderate clogging; it only needs replacing if it no longer regenerates.[2]
Does oil consumption affect the filter clogging?
On the Auris, several owners link the two: oil reaching the exhaust fouls the filter faster than normal.[2]

Other 1.4 D-4D faults
- High severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbocharger failureYes: the 1.4 D-4D's turbo is documented as failing on the Yaris, Corolla, Auris and MINI One D, sometimes prematurely (one case at 15,000 km covered under warranty) and other times after seizing alongside high oil consumption.Appears at around 15,000 km
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboOil build-up in the intercooler of the 1.4 D-4D (2014 campaign)On the 1.4 D-4D, oil from the crankcase or turbo breather can build up in the intercooler and pass into the intake, with heavy smoke and, in extreme cases, engine damage. Toyota ran a campaign in 2014 for this engine.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionInjector wear and failureYes: the common-rail injectors on the 1.4 D-4D are documented as failing on the Yaris, Auris and MINI One D, with symptoms of jerking, noise and the engine warning light on; one source describes the problem as "chronic" on the MINI One D's engine.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchPremature clutch and dual-mass flywheel wearThe 1.4 D-4D's clutch is frequently documented, almost always above 84,000 km, although there is the odd clearly premature case (a Yaris with the clutch replaced at 28,000 km); the dual-mass flywheel also fails, with proportionally more weight on the MINI One D.Appears at around 84,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with sootYes, though with fewer cases than on other Toyota diesels: the 1.4 D-4D's EGR valve clogs with soot, especially on short trips, with cases from around 189,000 km on the Yaris and an inexpensive clean (around €60) that usually resolves it on the Corolla.Appears at around 189,000 km
More faults with the particulate filter on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651EGR and particulate filter clogging, and emissions software updatesThe particulate filter and EGR clog up with short journeys, as on any diesel with these systems. In addition, Germany's KBA required software updates on several models with this engine between 2018 and 2021 because of a function that reduced EGR outside a temperature range.Repair (garage): €800–€2,500
- High severityFrequency: Common1.3 MultijetIncomplete particulate filter regenerations and oil dilutionIn heavy urban use, with short journeys that do not let the particulate filter regeneration finish, unburnt diesel passes into the sump and dilutes the oil; the level can rise on the dipstick and the oil loses its ability to lubricate. Repeated many times, it speeds up engine wear.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 HDiDPF clogging on additive-type systems (Eolys/cerine)The additive-type diesel particulate filter (DPF) of the 2.0 HDi clogs relatively easily on short journeys, especially on the 107/110 and 136-140 hp versions. The anti-pollution warning light comes on and, if ignored, the car loses power and may end up needing a new DPF.
- High severityFrequency: Common1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet IISaturated diesel particulate filter (DPF) from incomplete regenerationsIn urban use with short journeys, the particulate filter does not manage to complete its regeneration and becomes saturated; garages recommend a weekly motorway run to avoid it. The filter itself is among the weak points flagged in the 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet II after a certain mileage.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 Ingenium diéselFuel dilution of the oil linked to particulate filter regenerationsYes: on short trips and in urban use, the Ingenium diesel's particulate filter does not always complete regeneration, and some of the diesel injected to burn off the soot ends up mixing with the engine oil, which reduces its ability to lubricate.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMZR-CDOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
