Toyota 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV)Injectors
Injector wear and failure on the 1.4 D-4D
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency common: The injectors are documented on the first- and second-generation Yaris, the Auris and, expressly described as a "chronic" fault of this engine, the MINI One D; the published cases range from isolated replacements within a few years to units with over 200,000 km.[1][2][3][4]
Symptoms
- The engine warning light comes on when the control unit detects that an injector is spraying badly.[3]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- The engine jerks or loses smoothness at idle when one or more injectors fail.[4]Jerking: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- An injector that does not spray properly can make starting harder, especially when cold.[2]Hard to start: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
Several owners describe injector noise when cold and injection faults that, in some cases, were resolved with a diesel additive, which points to deposits or dirt in the injector itself rather than a widespread manufacturing defect.[1][2]
On the MINI One D, one source describes the problem as inherent to the engine ("soucis chroniques d'injection"), affecting both the injector seals and the injectors themselves.[4]
If it is not repaired: An injector that sprays badly can cause jerking and loss of power and, if it drips unburnt fuel, contribute to the oil becoming diluted.[2]
Affected cars and years
Documented on both outputs of the engine (75 and 90 hp) and on the models with the most sources available: Yaris, Auris and MINI One D.[1][2][3][4]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis and replacement of one or more common-rail injectors.[2]
The owners consulted do not consistently publish the cost of this repair on this engine; one Yaris case talks of replacing all four injectors "at half price" without giving the final figure.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Start the engine from cold and listen for whether the injector rattle is louder than normal, and check it does not jerk at idle.
Parts needed

Common-rail diesel injector
Sprays the diesel into the combustion chamber; replaced when it loses precision or drips.

How to prevent it
- Filling up at trusted petrol stations and not running the tank down to the bottom helps keep the injection system from drawing in impurities.
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Is it a known problem of the whole engine or only of some models?
It is documented on several different models (Yaris, Auris, MINI One D) throughout the engine's life, which points to a weak point of the engine itself rather than an isolated case on one specific model.[1][2][3][4]
Can a diesel additive fix it?
In one documented case, an additive resolved an injection fault attributed to deposits, but there is no guarantee it will work if the injector is already mechanically damaged.[2]

Other 1.4 D-4D faults
- High severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbocharger failureYes: the 1.4 D-4D's turbo is documented as failing on the Yaris, Corolla, Auris and MINI One D, sometimes prematurely (one case at 15,000 km covered under warranty) and other times after seizing alongside high oil consumption.Appears at around 15,000 km
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboOil build-up in the intercooler of the 1.4 D-4D (2014 campaign)On the 1.4 D-4D, oil from the crankcase or turbo breather can build up in the intercooler and pass into the intake, with heavy smoke and, in extreme cases, engine damage. Toyota ran a campaign in 2014 for this engine.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged diesel particulate filter (DPF)Yes, on units with a standard-fit particulate filter: the 1.4 D-4D's DPF fills with soot on short trips, with the warning light on and, in one documented Auris case, a complete replacement at 236,000 km.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchPremature clutch and dual-mass flywheel wearThe 1.4 D-4D's clutch is frequently documented, almost always above 84,000 km, although there is the odd clearly premature case (a Yaris with the clutch replaced at 28,000 km); the dual-mass flywheel also fails, with proportionally more weight on the MINI One D.Appears at around 84,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with sootYes, though with fewer cases than on other Toyota diesels: the 1.4 D-4D's EGR valve clogs with soot, especially on short trips, with cases from around 189,000 km on the Yaris and an inexpensive clean (around €60) that usually resolves it on the Corolla.Appears at around 189,000 km
More faults with the injectors on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651Delphi piezo injector failure (220/250 CDI)Yes: 220 and 250 CDI models built between 2008 and 2011 had Delphi piezo injectors that were prone to failing and seizing in the cylinder head. Mercedes-Benz replaced them under warranty in 2009 and switched the 220 CDI to solenoid injectors from 2010-2011, but the 250 CDI kept them.Repair (garage): €3,600–€5,900
- High severityFrequency: CommonBMW N52 / N53N53 piezoelectric injector failureThe N53's piezoelectric direct injectors fail frequently and cause misfires, rough idle and limp mode; replacing them is expensive and they must be coded.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMZR-CDOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
- High severityFrequency: CommonOM642Wear and failure of the Bosch piezo injectorsThe OM642's Bosch piezo injectors can fail from around 150,000-200,000 km, especially with poor-quality diesel; they cannot be repaired, only replaced. Because it is a V engine, those on the rear bank are harder to reach, which pushes up labour costs.Repair: €4,500–€6,500
- High severityFrequency: Common2.2 CDI (OM646)Injector seal leak with carbonisation around the seatYes: the copper washer that seals each injector can harden and let combustion gases through, forming a black crust of carbon around it. It is a known fault on Mercedes CDI diesels of this era, with injectors described as fragile on both the OM611 and the OM646.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.2/2.5 dCiInjection pump or injector failureThe 2.2 dCi's common rail injectors fail fairly often on the X-Trail and Almera, with cases of seizing and leaks; on the Almera with the older YD22DDT, the documented fault is in the injection pump electronics, not the injectors.
