Code C0035: front left wheel speed sensor (ABS)
C0035 means: fault in the circuit of the front left wheel speed sensor.[1][2] The ABS control unit (EBCM) detects a fault in the front left wheel speed sensor circuit: it does not receive a valid speed signal from that wheel, or the values it gives do not match what the manufacturer specifies. Without that signal, it cannot manage the ABS or stability control properly. Wheel speed sensors are Hall-effect sensors that work with a toothed reluctor ring, according to CódigosDTC: the control unit sends them a supply signal and they return a square-wave signal from which it calculates the wheel speed.[1][2][3][4]
What code C0035 means
The ABS control unit (EBCM) detects a fault in the front left wheel speed sensor circuit: it does not receive a valid speed signal from that wheel, or the values it gives do not match what the manufacturer specifies.
Watch out for the wheel: the meaning of C0xxx codes varies by brand. AutoDTCs and CódigosDTC give C0035 as the front left wheel, but TroubleCodes.net and DTCSearch define it as “Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Supply (subfault)” (supply to the front right wheel speed sensor), and OBD Advisor says that most cars refer to the front right and a few to the left, and that the manufacturer's information should be consulted. Confirm which wheel is faulty using the live ABS data before changing anything.[1][2][5][6][7]
The letter C indicates a chassis code (ABS, brakes, steering) and the 0 a code defined by the SAE standard, according to Wikipedia. Even so, as the sources do not agree on the meaning, MotorFiable treats it as a code that depends on the brand. The same applies to C0040, C0045 and C0050, which are collected here as variants for the other wheels according to AutoDTCs and CódigosDTC.[1][2][8]
Original definition (SAE J2012): Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction[1][2]
Codes from the same family
They indicate the same problem in a specific cylinder, bank or sensor. Causes, symptoms and diagnosis are those on this page.
- C0035Fault in the circuit of the front left wheel speed sensor.
- C0040Circuit of the front right wheel speed sensor according to AutoDTCs and CódigosDTC. Other tables, such as TroubleCodes.net, give it a different meaning (“Brake Pedal Switch A”, the brake pedal switch), so it depends on the brand.[3][9][10]
- C0045Circuit of the rear left wheel speed sensor according to AutoDTCs and CódigosDTC. TroubleCodes.net gives it a different meaning (“Brake Pressure Sensor B”, the brake pressure sensor), so it depends on the brand.[11][12][13]
- C0050Circuit of the rear right wheel speed sensor according to CódigosDTC. AutoDTCs lists it as “Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit” and attributes it to General Motors (rear right wheel), and TroubleCodes.net marks it “ISO/SAE Reserved”, so it depends on the brand.[4][14][15]
Causes of C0035 and its family
From most to least likely, according to the sources.
- 1Faulty wheel speed sensor.[1][2][6]
- 2Damaged wiring: rubbing or breaks near the wheel, where the harness flexes, or from corrosion or burns; and corroded, loose or poorly contacting connectors that cause a short circuit or an open circuit.[1][2]
- 3Damaged, rusted or dirty reluctor ring (tone wheel), or incorrect air gap. For magnetic rings, AutoDTCs cites corrosion under the ring or dirt, which can pass a static resistance test but lose pulses with the wheel turning.[1][6]
- 4Worn wheel bearing on cars where the sensor is integrated into the hub or bearing.[1]
- 5Metal debris stuck to the tip of a magnetic sensor.[1]
- 6Faults in the ABS control unit, including outdated software (OBD Advisor).[6]
Symptoms
- ABS and traction or stability control warning lights on, with those systems deactivated.[1][2][6]ABS/ESP light: faults that cause it
- Engine fault warning light on (CódigosDTC and OBD Advisor).[2][6]Engine warning light: faults that cause it
- Speedometer readings that do not make sense and, on some cars, cruise control that will not engage.[1][2][6]
- Knocking or slight vibration in the brake pedal.[2][6]
- Fault that appears or worsens only above a certain speed. Normal braking (without ABS) is not affected, according to AutoDTCs.[1]
How to diagnose C0035
In order: from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.
- 1Confirm which wheel the code indicates and check whether there are codes for other wheel sensors. If several fail at once, it points to a common supply, earth or module problem rather than a specific sensor. Deal with the accompanying codes first.[1][6]
- 2Inspect the sensor tip (metal debris), the reluctor ring (rust, cracks, missing teeth) and the air gap between them.[1][6]
- 3Check the wiring where it flexes next to the wheel (rubbing, breaks) and the connector (corrosion). Clean away dirt and corrosion.[1][2][6]
- 4Test the sensor electrically: resistance for passive sensors, or supply and signal for active ones, and compare with the manufacturer's figure. Compare the live speed data of all four wheels while driving: if one drops out, that is confirmed.[1][6]
- 5If the sensor is integrated into the hub or bearing and the sensor and wiring check out, consider the bearing or its encoder ring. Replace the sensor only if the tests confirm it, clear the codes and carry out a road test.[1][6]
Can I keep driving with C0035?
Garage soon
The sources do not agree on the severity. AutoDTCs rates it as moderate for the C0035: it can be driven with care in the short term, because normal braking is not affected, but the ABS and traction control are deactivated, so allow more braking distance and avoid slippery surfaces until it is repaired. For its C0040 and C0045 entries it rates it as high (brakes and steering: check soon), and OBD Advisor rates it as high and advises against driving with the code. The prudent course is to take the car to a workshop soon.[1][6][9][11]

Documented faults related to C0035
Known faults of specific engines and cars, with their repair cost, the affected years and their sources.
ABS and stability control (ESP): the most serious faults by engine and car
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentHyundai Tucson IIIFire risk from the ABS control module (HECU)Yes. Hyundai recalled the Tucson TL built between February 2017 and August 2020 (campaign 11DC03) because the ABS module can fail internally and cause a short circuit with a risk of fire in the engine bay, even with the car parked. In the US the same campaign (20V543000) covered model years 2016-2021.
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentKia Sportage IVShort circuit in the ABS/ESP unit with fire riskYes: Germany's KBA and the US NHTSA have recorded several campaigns (2021 and 2025) over a short circuit in the ABS/ESP unit that can cause a fire in the engine bay, even with the car parked and switched off.
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentOpel Corsa FBrake fluid leak and loss of ABS/ESP from the EBS valve block (2024 production)The manufacturer recalled Opel Corsa F cars built between 24 May and 27 August 2024 because of an EBS valve block with a casting defect that can cause an internal brake fluid leak and the loss of stability control, ABS and electronic brake distribution.
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentPeugeot 2008 IIReduced braking effectiveness from an HBC electronic fault (2023 production)On Peugeot 2008 II models built between 2 October and 15 November 2023, an error in the vacuum circuit can make the electronic unit send an invalid value to the hydraulic brake compensation (HBC), which reduces braking effectiveness.
Wheel bearings and hubs: the most serious faults by engine and car
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalCitroën C5 AircrossInsufficient tightening of the rear wheel hub (built December 2021)In March 2023 Citroën recalled C5 Aircross cars built in December 2021 because the rear wheel hub may not be tightened to the correct torque on the axle, which can make the wheel tilt noticeably.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalCitroën Jumper IIFaulty fixing of the front hub to the shock absorber: the wheel axle can break (2019 vehicles)Yes: Citroën recalled Citroën Jumpers built between April and June 2019 because the wheel axle could be faulty and break, changing the behaviour of the steering and creating a risk of accident. The DVSA describes it as a fixing of the hub to the front shock absorber that might not meet specification.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalCitroën Jumpy IIIRear brake discs poorly seated on the hub (early 2025 batch)A batch of Jumpy and Spacetourer built in late January and early February 2025 is covered by campaign GN5 because the rear brake discs do not sit firmly enough on the hub: the disc can crack, the wheel bolts can loosen and, in the worst case, the wheel can come off. The repair is free.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalFord TransitInsufficient rear axle lubrication causing rear wheel bearing failureRecall 24S57 covers Transits built between 26 September 2023 and 29 April 2024: the rear axle may not be lubricated enough, which causes the wheel bearings to malfunction and can lock the rear wheels, with a loss of control.
Wiring, connectors and short circuits: the most serious faults by engine and car
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalBMW N62 / N63Additional turbo coolant pump with a risk of short circuit and fireIn 2011 BMW recalled 5, 6 and 7 Series, X5 and X6 models built between 2007 and 2011 because of the additional turbo coolant pump: moisture, a short circuit and, in extreme cases, a fire. In 2012 there was another campaign for a crack in the pump, with a more robust version.
- Critical severityFrequency: Occasional1.6 GDi híbrido (Kappa)Main relay of the power relay assembly (overheating and fire risk)Yes, on the first units: Hyundai and Kia recalled 2016–2018 Ioniq and Niro hybrids and plug-in hybrids because the main relay that connects the high-voltage battery could come loose, overheat and, in the worst case, cause a fire.
- Critical severityFrequency: Occasional1.6 GDi híbrido (Kappa)Clutch hydraulic actuator (HCA): leak or moisture with risk of short circuit and fireYes, this is the most documented hybrid system fault: the hydraulic actuator that engages the combustion engine with the hybrid assembly has had two recalls (2018 for a leak on the Niro and 2025 for moisture in its electronic board on the Niro, Ceed and XCeed PHEV), with a risk of short circuit and fire.
- High severityFrequency: Occasional1.3 TCeBlown fuel pump fuseOn the Renault Captur II and Clio V with the 1.3 TCe engine, a 20-amp fuse can blow and leave the car without an engine. According to L'argus, in April 2021 this fault still had no factory fix; the official service centre's diagnosis includes checking, and sometimes replacing, the catalytic converter.
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonRover 75Seat SRS connector fault with airbag and seatbelt warning light onAuto Express warns that the Rover 75's seat SRS connector can cause the airbags to fail, and dealers were fixing it with revised connectors. The Dutch APK inspection puts the airbag or seatbelt fault warning among the most frequent defects across almost all series.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalAlfa Romeo GiuliettaShort circuit from badly routed wiring that can prevent gear shifting (KBA campaign, 2010-2015)Yes: according to Germany's KBA, on Alfa Romeo Giulietta cars built between 2010 and 2015 inadequate cable routing could cause a short circuit and, as a result, gear-shift failure.
Frequently asked questions
Which wheel is C0035?
It depends on the brand. AutoDTCs and CódigosDTC give it as the front left, while TroubleCodes.net, DTCSearch and OBD Advisor define it as the supply to the front right sensor (and OBD Advisor accepts that on a few cars it is the left). The safe way is to check the live data for all four wheels and see which one drops out.[1][2][5][6][7]
Can I brake normally with C0035?
According to AutoDTCs, normal braking is not affected, but the ABS and traction and stability control are deactivated, so it is worth allowing more braking distance and avoiding wet or slippery surfaces. OBD Advisor, on the other hand, advises against driving with the code.[1][6]
Is it the sensor or the wheel bearing?
It could be either: AutoDTCs cites a worn bearing on cars with the sensor integrated into the hub, but only after ruling out the sensor and the wiring.[1]
What should I check first?
That there are no other wheel codes, the sensor tip and the reluctor ring, and the wiring and connector next to the wheel. If several wheels fail at once, AutoDTCs points to a common supply, earth or module problem.[1][6]
Will I pass the MOT with code C0035?
If the code has switched on the engine warning light, no: with that light on, the inspection records a serious defect, and on Euro 5 and Euro 6 cars the ITV (Spain's roadworthiness inspection, similar to the MOT) also reads the OBD diagnostic system. Repair the fault before you go; clearing the code just before the inspection does not help either, because it counts as a serious defect.[16]
