P0010 on Mercedes-Benz: causes and affected engines
Documented faults in Mercedes-Benz engines that can trigger P0010
Grouped by engine or model, from most to least important. These are faults with the variable valve timing actuator: not all of them will necessarily set the code, and only a diagnosis confirms the cause on your car.

Common causes of P0010 on any make
From most to least likely, according to the sources.
- 1Faulty intake camshaft oil control solenoid valve (VVT solenoid or OCV), for example with a failed internal coil. All the sources mention this cause; Carista puts it first.[1][2][3][4][5]
- 2Damaged or corroded solenoid valve wiring or connector. Carista points out that this is common around the rocker cover, where oil can seep in.[1][2][3][4][5]
- 3Dirty or old oil, of the wrong viscosity or at a low level. Autodoc Club puts it first and Carista mentions sludgy oil as a chronic cause of failure of this solenoid valve.[1][2][4]
- 4Fault in the ECU or in its solenoid valve driver; Carista calls it rare.[2][3][4][5]
What to check first
The first diagnostic steps, from the most likely and cheapest to check to the most expensive.
- 1Read all the codes with a diagnostic tool. In Saab's procedure, a check is made that there are no codes for the crankshaft and camshaft sensors as well (P0335, P0336, P0340, P0341).[2][5]
- 2Check the oil: level, condition and viscosity. If it is dirty or not the one the manufacturer recommends, change it together with the filter and see whether the code comes back.[1][2][4]
- 3Inspect the wiring and connector of the intake camshaft solenoid valve: breaks, corrosion, loose connections or seeped oil.[1][2][3][4]

Frequently asked questions
Which Mercedes-Benz engines have faults that can trigger P0010?
M111 (1 fault), M270/M274 (1 fault), M271 (1 fault) and 1.3 TCe (1 fault). Each fault has its own page with the affected years and versions, the symptoms and the repair cost.
What does code P0010 mean on a Mercedes-Benz?
Camshaft position actuator "A": circuit fault (bank 1). The ECU has detected a fault in the electrical circuit of camshaft position actuator "A" on bank 1: the solenoid valve of the variable valve timing (VVT) on the intake camshaft. Carista describes it as an open circuit or short circuit in that solenoid valve, which prevents the ECU from operating it to advance or retard the timing. It is a generic OBD-II code: it means the same on a Mercedes-Benz as on any other make.[1][2][3][4][5]
Can I keep driving with P0010?
Garage soon. No source says to stop the car immediately, but they do not all treat it the same. Autodoc Club advises driving as little as possible, because the engine may behave erratically, and warns that, although it may not be serious at first, if it is put off it can end up in serious damage. Carista and MechanicBase class it as medium severity; MechanicBase says you can keep driving, but that it must be repaired soon because the engine loses performance and carrying on risks more damage. TroubleCodes.net agrees that you can normally drive, with a loss of performance, and recommends diagnosing it straight away to avoid bigger damage.[1][2][3][4]
