Air conditioning not cooling: causes and the faults that trigger it

The most common cause is that the circuit has lost gas through a leak: RACE identifies it as the most common reason the air does not cool. Other causes are the compressor, a dirty or damaged condenser, a clogged cabin filter or a faulty fan or fuse. Recharging without locating the leak does not fix it and the new gas escapes again, so the sensible course is to ask for a diagnosis that finds the leak before topping up.[1][2][3][4]

67 documented faults cause it in 67 cars. The most important:

    What it means

If the air comes out lukewarm, gas may be missing because of a leak, the compressor or its clutch may be failing, or the condenser may be blocked. On recent cars, R1234yf gas makes recharges more expensive.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

    What to do now

    Monitor

Do not just recharge it: ask for a leak test to find the leak before topping up.

    89 sourcesHow we work

    Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

    1. 1. Refrigerant gas leak

      Common cause

RACE considers it the most common reason and places it, for example, in cracked pipes or in a damaged evaporator core. The gas circulates in a closed circuit and is not consumed: if it drops, there is a loss at a seal, pipe, connection or at the condenser (RACE, Autonoción).[1][2][3]

Faults with with the air conditioning

    2. 2. Faulty compressor or compressor clutch

      Possible cause

The compressor is the heart of the system. Autonoción cites strange noises, vibrations when the air con is switched on or the magnetic clutch's «click» not being heard as symptoms. Motor16 and Autopista add the pulley and belt as possible sources of noise.[3][5][6]

Faults with with the air conditioning

    3. 3. Dirty or damaged condenser

      Possible cause

Autonoción explains that the condenser fills with leaves, dust and insects, blocks the passage of air and cannot cool the gas as it should. RACE adds that it sits near the bumper, an area exposed to knocks, and that if its fins are punctured there is a gas leak and it has to be replaced.[3][7]

Faults with with the air conditioning

    4. 4. Clogged cabin filter

      Possible cause

If the filter is not changed regularly it fills with dirt and little air gets through (RACE). Motor16 cites it, along with a blocked duct or a deteriorated fan, when airflow is weak even though the air is cold.[1][8]

Faults with with the air conditioning

    5. 5. Faulty fuse or fan

      Possible cause

RACE explains that a fuse can leave the air con circuit dead and that, if the fans break, no air reaches the cabin even though the pipes are cold.[1]

Faults with with the air conditioning

    6. 6. Sensor, circuit pressure or electrical connections

      Uncommon

Motor16 points to a sensor when air comes out but does not cool, and when it cools intermittently it recommends checking sensors, circuit pressure, electrical connections or the compressor itself.[8]

Faults with with the air conditioning

    7. 7. Motor of the flap that mixes cold and hot air

      Uncommon

RACE points out that climate control systems have a flap moved by an electric motor where cold air is mixed with hot; if that motor fails, it feels as though the air is not cooling properly.[1]

Faults with with the air conditioning

    Depending on what you notice

The air con does not cool in very hot weather

If air comes out but not cold air, Motor16 points to a lack of gas, a leak, the compressor or a sensor, and Autonoción adds the dirty condenser, which cannot cool the gas. When it cools on and off, Motor16 recommends checking sensors, circuit pressure, electrical connections or the compressor.[3][8]

Air con leak in the car

The refrigerant gas is not used up in operation: if it drops, it escapes through a seal, pipe, connection or the condenser (RACE). Recharging without locating the leak leaves the problem intact and the new gas escapes again (Motor16); Autonoción compares it with filling a bucket with a hole in it. RACE adds that a recharge should only be done when necessary and after checking the circuit and ruling out leaks.[2][3][4]

How to detect an air con leak

HELLA describes three garage methods: a dye that shows up under a UV lamp, an electronic detector that signals with an audible tone and a nitrogen test, up to 12 bar, in which the pressure is monitored for a few minutes to see whether it holds. RACE says that a full recharge includes a contrast dye ampoule so the leak can be checked with ultraviolet light.[1][9]

Repairing an air con leak: cost

There is no single price. Autonoción says a small leak usually costs less than 100 euros, and RACE puts the replacement of a punctured condenser at 200 to 300 euros including labour and gas (prices in Spain). RACE warns that the most expensive repairs are leaks in hard-to-reach areas and removing the dashboard to get to the evaporator.[2][3][7]

Noise from the air con compressor

Autopista lists as causes of noise the deteriorated serpentine belt (squealing), loose bolts (knocking), the worn magnetic clutch, the loose or damaged fan blades (metallic noise) and blocked filters. Motor16 agrees that noise when it is switched on points to the compressor, pulley, belt or fan. If the compressor has to be replaced, Motor16 speaks of more than 500 euros in one article and more than 1,000 in another (prices in Spain).[5][6][8]

Does the car's air con use petrol?

Yes: according to the OCU (a Spanish consumer organisation), cited by Cuatro, air con can raise consumption by between 5% and 20%, 0.2 to 1 litre more per 100 km, and Motor16 puts the increase from running it unnecessarily at between 10% and 20%. What is not used up in operation is the refrigerant gas, which circulates in a closed circuit (RACE).[2][8][10]

    What to check first

    1. Identify how it fails: air comes out but does not cool (gas, leak, compressor or sensor), low airflow (cabin filter, duct or fan) or cold only at times (sensors, pressure, connections or compressor).[8]
    2. Check the cabin filter and keep the air intakes clean: RACE puts the price of a new filter at between 8 and 30 euros (in Spain).[1][2]
    3. Check that the condenser is not covered by leaves, dust or insects or knocked at the front.[3][7]
    4. Listen when you switch the air con on: you should hear the clutch «click» and there should be no squealing, knocking or metallic noises.[3][6]
    5. Ask the garage to locate the leak (UV dye, electronic detector or nitrogen) before recharging; RACE reminds us that a recharge should only be done when necessary and after ruling out leaks.[2][9]
    6. Leave the refrigeration circuit to the garage: Motor16 warns that disconnecting pipes, handling the refrigerant or applying incompatible products is not a job for the owner.[8]

    Can I keep driving?

    Urgency: Monitor

None of the sources consulted suggests that air that does not cool prevents you from driving, but it should not be left either: Motor16 advises a professional diagnosis without waiting for the compressor to fail completely. Noises call for more haste: Autopista warns that a deteriorated belt can break and affect other parts of the car, and that with a loose fan blade the system must be switched off immediately.[5][6]

How much it costs to fix

Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.

    Frequently asked questions

How often does the air con gas need recharging?

RACE says there is no single interval valid for all cars: it recommends checking the climate control once a year, especially before summer, and recharging only when needed and after checking the circuit and ruling out leaks.[2]

How much does it cost to recharge a car's air con?

Autonoción puts the recharge with R134a, the gas in cars from before 2017, at 60 to 120 euros, and with R1234yf, which is more expensive, at 150 to 250 euros. Motor16 gives 60 to 120 euros in one article and 80 to 150 in another for R134a, and reminds you that the leak must be found before topping up (prices in Spain).[3][4][5]

How much does it cost to replace the air con compressor?

The sources give very different figures: Autonoción speaks of from 150 euros for the part alone, plus labour and gas; Motor16 of more than 500 euros in one article and more than 1,000 in another, and of 400 to 900 euros, plus labour and cleaning of the circuit, if the fault is caused by unsuitable gas. The price goes up if the dashboard has to be removed (prices in Spain).[3][4][5][8]

Does the air con gas get used up in operation?

No. RACE explains that the refrigerant circulates in a closed circuit and is not consumed like fuel; if the quantity drops, there is a loss at a seal, pipe, connection or at the condenser. Autonoción says the same: if the level drops, it is because there is a leak.[2][3]

Can I recharge the air con gas myself?

Motor16 advises against it: it says you should not disconnect pipes, handle the refrigerant or apply products incompatible with the car's materials, and that any intervention inside the refrigeration circuit is a garage job. RACE and Motor16 also agree that before recharging the circuit must be checked and leaks ruled out.[2][4][8]
