Hard brake pedal or loss of brake assistance: causes and the faults that trigger it

A hard brake pedal, which needs much more force to brake, points above all to the brake servo: a damaged diaphragm or a loss of vacuum from a cracked or loose hose or a faulty valve. With the engine off it is normal. The sources consulted ask for the car to be taken to a garage, because braking is poorer and the braking distance increases.[1][2][3][4]

7 documented faults cause it in 6 engines. The most important:

What to do now

As soon as possible

This is a safety risk: drive slowly, leave more distance and take the car to a garage without delay. If the brake is very hard, do not drive.

What it means

The brake pedal goes hard and much more force is needed to stop the car. On turbocharged petrol engines with a vacuum pump, it can be because the pump is not generating vacuum as its oil feed is blocked.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

  1. 1. Cracked or loose vacuum hose

    Common cause

RACE points out that the vacuum hose running from the intake manifold to the brake servo can crack or come loose and, without vacuum, the brake loses assistance and the pedal goes hard; in its brake servo guide it calls this the most common fault, because the hose cracks over time. Autofácil adds that the non-return valve at the servo's inlet can also stop holding vacuum.[1][2][3]

Faults with with the brake servo

  2. 2. Brake servo with a split diaphragm

    Common cause

According to RACE, the servo's internal diaphragm can be damaged. Autofácil explains that an internal fluid leak from the master cylinder can destroy it without any fluid loss being visible outside, and that the servo then works like an unassisted brake.[1][2]

Faults with with the brake servo

  3. 3. Faulty vacuum pump

    Possible cause

In diesel engines, which don't generate enough vacuum, a mechanical pump provides it. Autofácil cites broken vacuum pump vanes as a cause of lack of vacuum, and RACE reminds readers that electric cars have an electric vacuum pump.[2][3]

Faults with with the brake servo

  4. 4. Faulty electric or hydraulic assistance in hybrids and electric cars

    Uncommon

Autopista says that in hybrids and electric cars the assistance is usually electric because there isn't always vacuum, and that a hard pedal can indicate an assistance problem, a vacuum leak or an electrical fault.[4]

Faults with with the brake servo

  5. 5. Loss of effectiveness from overheated brakes

    Uncommon

RACE mentions that prolonged heating can cause brake fade, that is, loss of friction, and that a hard pedal with weak braking can also come from the brake servo.[5]

Faults with with brake calipers and discs

  6. 6. Something is blocking the pedal

    Uncommon

RACE reminds readers to rule out objects in the footwell, such as a bottle, a can or a badly fitted floor mat, which limit the pedal's travel.[1]

Faults with with the brake system

Depending on what you notice

The pedal is hard with the engine off

RACE explains that this is normal: the brake servo needs the engine's vacuum and, if you press the pedal several times with the engine off, the remaining vacuum is used up.[1][3]

I have to press hard and the car brakes less

RACE attributes it to the brake servo, and describes the symptoms as a rigid pedal, more effort needed to brake and longer braking distances than usual.[1][3]

Hard pedal in a hybrid or electric car

Autopista explains that in these cars the assistance is usually electric and that a hard pedal can be an assistance problem, a vacuum leak or an electrical fault; RACE puts the electric pump at around €250 in Spain.[3][4]

My pedal isn't hard but soft or sinks

That is a different problem: RACE links a soft or sinking pedal to air in the circuit or low brake fluid, and Autopista asks for the master cylinder, circuit and possible leaks to be checked.[4][5]

What to check first

  1. Check that the engine is running and that nothing is blocking the pedal (bottles, cans, floor mat): with the engine off, a hard pedal is normal.[1]
  2. Check whether the vacuum hose between the intake manifold and the brake servo is cracked or disconnected.[1][3]
  3. At the garage, measuring the vacuum with a vacuum gauge at the pump, the hose and the servo inlet, and testing the non-return valve, is the sequence Autofácil describes for locating the cause.[2]
  4. If the hose, valve and pump are fine, suspicion moves to the brake servo's internal diaphragm, which means replacing the servo.[2]
  5. Also check the brake fluid level and the condition of the pads and discs, which RACE lists as causes of the car braking less.[5]

Can I keep driving?

Urgency: As soon as possible

No source sets how many kilometres you can drive. RACE says a brake servo fault with a hard pedal and weak braking requires a garage, and Autofácil describes it as an unassisted brake: it brakes, but with much more effort and a longer distance. It is a safety risk, so avoid using the car more than strictly necessary until it is repaired; if the brakes suddenly fail, RACE advises pumping the pedal and using engine braking, without switching off the engine.[1][2][5]

How much it costs to fix

Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.

RepairPrice
Brake servo on a compact car, according to RACE (part; labour is extra)[3]€350 – €400
Brake servo, figure given by Autofácil[2]€400
Electric vacuum pump on an electric car, according to RACE[3]€250

Hard brake pedal by brand

Fault codes that may go with it

If you have an OBD reader, the code stored by the control unit helps you work out which system is failing.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for the brake pedal to be hard with the engine off?

Yes. RACE explains that the brake servo only works with the vacuum from the running engine and that, with the engine off, the pedal feels higher and harder; pressing it repeatedly uses up the vacuum.[1][3]

Can you drive with a hard brake pedal?

The sources give no limit, but they describe it as a fault that reduces assistance and lengthens braking, so RACE asks for a garage and not to drive until it is repaired.[1][3][5]

How much does it cost to fix a brake servo?

RACE gives about €350-400 in Spain for the brake servo of a compact car, plus labour, and Autofácil mentions about €400. If the fault is a vacuum hose the cost will be lower, but none of the sources consulted gives a figure.[2][3]

What do I do if the brakes fail while I'm driving?

RACE advises staying calm, switching on the hazard lights, pumping the pedal hard, changing down to use engine braking and heading for the hard shoulder. It does not recommend switching off the engine, because the steering gets heavier, or yanking the handbrake at speed.[5]

Can a hard pedal be due to the vacuum pump?

Yes in diesel engines: Autofácil cites broken vacuum pump vanes among the causes of lack of vacuum, and RACE explains that diesels depend on a mechanical pump because they don't generate enough vacuum.[2][3]
