Fiat 500X (2014–today)

2016 Fiat 500X problems

The 2016 Fiat 500X was sold with 3 engines that we have documented: the 1.3 Multijet, the 1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet II and the 1.4 T-Jet. All of them have serious faults that affect the cars of that year. The safest option is the 1.4 T-Jet (verdict “With caution”). Outside the engine, 3 documented faults affect 2016 cars, such as gearbox faults: internal failures in the automatic and jerky gear changes.

1.3 Multijet engine in the 2016 Fiat 500X

Names: 1.3 Multijet 95

  • 1.3 Multijet II 16v Euro 6 (95 hp, 2015-2020)

    95 hp · A13DTE

The timing chain problem is partly mitigated compared with earlier generations, but it does not go away, and the demands of particulate filter regenerations on cars used mainly in town are added to it. Worth considering with an oil history and mixed journeys.[2][3]

Names: 1.6 MultiJet 120 · 2.0 MultiJet 140 · 2.0 MultiJet 170

  • 1.6 MultiJet II (90-130 hp, 2006-2024)

    90–130 hp

It is a mechanically sound engine if maintenance is kept up, but with known faults worth checking: the timing belt tensioner may need replacing before the official interval and the EGR valve clogs easily in urban use. A reasonable buy with a verifiable service history and after checking these points.[6][7]

    With caution
  • 2.0 MultiJet II (120-170 hp, 2008-2024)

    120–170 hp

It shares the same weak points as the 1.6 in the timing belt, EGR and particulate filter, with the addition of a turbo and a dual-mass flywheel that work with more torque in the higher-output versions. Recommended with a service history and after checking these components.[5][8]

The reliability pages and owner reports we consulted for the Fiat 500X, Alfa Romeo MiTo, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass repeatedly document three problems: turbocharger wear or failure (sometimes at very low mileage), faults in the MultiAir/UniAir unit itself and high oil consumption. No manufacturer has acknowledged a specific campaign or extended warranty, so it is worth checking the history and test driving the car both cold and warm before buying.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]

Is the 2016 Fiat 500X better than the 2015?

Going by the documented faults, they are the same: the same engines and the same faults affect the 2015 and 2016 cars. Choose on condition, mileage and maintenance history.

What is the best year for the Fiat 500X?

According to our score, the best are 2026, 2025, 2022 and 1 other years with the same score (6.9/10). The year with the worst score is 2015 (5.4/10). Each year's score counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those cars.

What faults does the 2016 Fiat 500X have?

The most important ones documented for 2016 cars are: timing chain stretch and tensioner failure (1.3 Multijet, critical severity), early tensioner wear and risk of timing belt failure (1.6 and 2.0 MultiJet II, critical severity), gearbox faults: internal failures in the automatic and jerky gear changes (gearbox and clutch, critical severity), risk of the rear seat backrest not locking (2015-2018 build) (airbags and safety, critical severity) and incomplete particulate filter regenerations and oil dilution (1.3 Multijet, high severity).
