MINI Cooper R50 problems (2001–2006)

The only engine of the MINI Cooper R50 that we have documented, the 1.4 D-4D, has high or critical severity faults in the versions it is fitted to. Our verdict for the versions it is fitted to: «With caution».[1][2][3][4][5]

Outside the engine: Outside the engine, the Mini Cooper R50 accumulates in the fiches-auto.fr reports faults in the power steering (rack and pump), the gearbox and clutch, the electric windows and the suspension. We have found no official campaigns for systems other than the engine.[2][6]

MINI Cooper R50 rating: acceptable reliability

Calculated using only 9 documented faults and their sources: the most serious and frequent faults weigh more. Limited evidence: it is based on few sources or few documented faults, so it is not included in the rankings. Having few documented faults does not mean it is reliable: it may simply be little studied. How it is calculated

  • Engine5.25 faults
  • Gearbox6.81 fault
  • Suspension8.21 fault and ITV (technical inspection)
  • Brakes6.5Technical inspection (ITV) only: 1.4 times the defects normal for its age
  • Tyres and wheels10.0No documented faults
  • Steering7.11 fault and ITV (technical inspection)
  • Electrical system9.31 fault
  • Headlights and lights7.3Technical inspection (ITV) only: 1.1 times the defects normal for its age
  • Electronics and infotainment10.0No documented faults
  • Climate control10.0No documented faults
  • Bodywork and interior8.7Technical inspection (ITV) only: 0.5 times the defects normal for its age
  • Airbags and safety10.0No documented faults

Documented engine

The first label is the most serious fault affecting that engine in this car; the second, our verdict for the versions it is fitted to. Each engine's risk index is calculated only from the faults that affect this car (how we calculate it). We only show engines we have documented with sources: if yours does not appear, we have not analysed it yet. View all engines

    With caution

The injectors, turbo and clutch and dual-mass flywheel assembly are documented on the first-generation Yaris and on the MINI One D with this same output; it is worth checking the history of these parts before buying.[1][2]

  • 1.4 D-4D 90 (1ND-TV, 88-90 hp, 2004-2018)2004–2018 · 88–90 hp · 1ND-TV

    With caution

This is the version with the most documented cases of injector, turbo, EGR valve and clutch and dual-mass flywheel faults and, on units with a particulate filter, DPF clogging; it is worth checking these points before buying, although we have not found a pattern as serious as that of other, larger Toyota diesels.[3][4][5]

Faults that affect the Cooper R50

Only those that affect the versions and years that this car used. The 1.4 D-4D has 6 documented faults in total.

  1. High severityFrequency: CommonTurboTurbocharger failureYes: the 1.4 D-4D's turbo is documented as failing on the Yaris, Corolla, Auris and MINI One D, sometimes prematurely (one case at 15,000 km covered under warranty) and other times after seizing alongside high oil consumption.Appears at around 15,000 km
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionInjector wear and failureYes: the common-rail injectors on the 1.4 D-4D are documented as failing on the Yaris, Auris and MINI One D, with symptoms of jerking, noise and the engine warning light on; one source describes the problem as "chronic" on the MINI One D's engine.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlClogged diesel particulate filter (DPF)Yes, on units with a standard-fit particulate filter: the 1.4 D-4D's DPF fills with soot on short trips, with the warning light on and, in one documented Auris case, a complete replacement at 236,000 km.
  4. Medium severityFrequency: CommonClutchPremature clutch and dual-mass flywheel wearThe 1.4 D-4D's clutch is frequently documented, almost always above 84,000 km, although there is the odd clearly premature case (a Yaris with the clutch replaced at 28,000 km); the dual-mass flywheel also fails, with proportionally more weight on the MINI One D.Appears at around 84,000 km
  5. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve clogged with sootYes, though with fewer cases than on other Toyota diesels: the 1.4 D-4D's EGR valve clogs with soot, especially on short trips, with cases from around 189,000 km on the Yaris and an inexpensive clean (around €60) that usually resolves it on the Corolla.Appears at around 189,000 km

We have found no official campaigns for systems other than the engine. The most important documented faults are: power steering rack and pump failure (steering, high severity), faults in the CVT automatic gearbox, the manual gearbox and the clutch (gearbox and clutch, high severity), wear of the suspension bushes, ball joints and arms (suspension, medium severity) and electric window failure (electrical system, low severity).[2][6]

What faults does the MINI Cooper R50 have?

The most important by severity and frequency, on the engines we have documented, are: turbocharger failure (1.4 D-4D, high severity), injector wear and failure (1.4 D-4D, medium severity), clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF) (1.4 D-4D, medium severity), premature clutch and dual-mass flywheel wear (1.4 D-4D, medium severity) and EGR valve clogged with soot (1.4 D-4D, medium severity).

What is the best year to buy a MINI Cooper R50?

According to our rating by year, the best are 2002 and 2001 (5.4/10); the worst rated is 2003 (5.3/10). Each year's rating counts only the engines sold that year and the faults that affect those units: open each year to see what changes.
