PSA 1.0 VTi / PureTech 68 (EB0)Oil consumption
Excessive oil consumption through the piston rings on the 1.0 PureTech
Yes. Stellantis acknowledges that naturally aspirated 1.0 and 1.2 EB engines built between June 2012 and November 2016 can use excessive oil because of fouling of the piston rings; depending on consumption and mileage, its network replaces the water outlet housing or the whole engine.[1]
Why this rating?
High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.
Frequency very frequent: The manufacturer has a specific programme covering all naturally aspirated 1.0 and 1.2 EB engines built between June 2012 and 13 November 2016, that is, the entire EB0 production. In reviews from owners of the 208 and C3 with this engine it is the most cited fault, and the French press was already pointing it out in 2018.[1][4][5][6][7]
Symptoms
- You have to top up the oil between services; it is the problem most often repeated by owners of the 208 and C3 with this engine.[5][6]Uses oil: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- The car warns of low oil shortly after a service.[8]
- Engine fault warning light due to catalytic converter faults, which some owners link to burnt oil.[9]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- In advanced cases, a cylinder loses compression and the engine runs without power.[9]Less power: other faults that cause it · Monitor
Why it happens
According to the manufacturer's criteria reported by L'argus, in the naturally aspirated EB engines (1.0 and 1.2) the consumption is due to fouling of the piston rings.[1]
The problem is not new: in 2018 it was already reported that the 68 and 82 hp three-cylinders were using oil and that the official network replaced, depending on the case, the water outlet housing, the cylinder head cover or the engine.[7]
If it is not repaired: If the level is not monitored, the engine can run short of oil and fail. Under the manufacturer's scale, high consumption means replacing the complete engine, and owners of the 208 and C3 describe failed engines and replaced catalytic converters.[1][8][9]
Affected cars and years
The programme covers naturally aspirated EB engines built between June 2012 and 13 November 2016, a period that includes the entire EB0 production (December 2012 to July 2016).[1][4]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Replacement of the water outlet housing or the complete engine, depending on the measured consumption and the mileage.[2][3]
We have not found published quotes in Spain for this engine. As a reference for the part, a used, tested EB0 engine is advertised in Spain from €2,319 including VAT (excluding shipping and fitting) and a reconditioned one in France costs €3,540 including VAT, plus a deposit that is refunded when the old engine is handed in; labour must be added.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Ask for the maintenance invoices. To apply its programme, Stellantis requires the last three, with a tolerance of 3 months or 3,000 km on the intervals.[1][10]
- Ask whether the engine has already been replaced or repaired under the oil consumption programme and ask for the invoice; if there isn't one, check with the official service using the VIN.[1][11]
- Pull the dipstick: a low level shortly after an oil change is a bad sign. If you can, ask for a consumption test; above 80,000 km, the manufacturer considers consumption of more than 0.25 litres per 1,000 km abnormal.[1]
- Use an OBD reader or ask for a diagnostic: catalytic converter or misfire codes can indicate that the engine is burning oil.[9]

How to prevent it
- Check the level with the dipstick often (for example, every second fill-up) and top up only with the oil specified in the service book.
- Stick to the oil change intervals and keep all the invoices: without them you cannot access the manufacturer's coverage.[10]
- If you notice it is using more than normal, note down every top-up (date, kilometres and litres) before going to the official service: the diagnosis is based on consumption per 1,000 km.[1]

What owners say
Frequently asked questions
How much oil can a 1.0 VTi 68 use before it counts as a fault?
The manufacturer's scale depends on mileage. Above 80,000 km, using more than 0.25 litres per 1,000 km is already considered abnormal and means replacing the engine; with lower mileage the limits are higher (0.50 l between 60,000 and 80,000 km and 0.70 l below 60,000 km).[1]
What does the official service do if it confirms the consumption?
It depends on the consumption and the mileage: if it is moderate and the car has low mileage, it replaces the water outlet housing; if it exceeds the limits, it replaces the complete engine. Diagnosis and repair are carried out at the brand's network.[1]
Is my 1.0 PureTech still covered by the extended warranty?
Coverage lasts 10 years from the start of the original warranty (or 175,000-180,000 km, depending on the phase of the programme). As the EB0 was built between 2012 and 2016, the vast majority of units have already passed that period; confirm it with the official service using the VIN.[4][10][13]
Can oil consumption damage the catalytic converter?
Some owners of the 208 with this engine report catalytic converter failures between 54,000 and 70,000 km and link them to burnt oil. This is owner testimony, not a conclusion from the manufacturer, but it is worth checking if the car uses oil.[9]

Other 1.0 PureTech faults
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalTimingDegradation of the oil-bath timing beltThe 1.0 VTi/PureTech 68 uses the same oil-bath timing belt as the 1.2. Over time it can degrade and shed debris that blocks the oil pump strainer, with a risk of serious failure. It has not had a recall, but it falls under Stellantis's extended warranty.Repair (garage): €400–€800
- Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIgnitionIgnition coil and spark plug failureOn the 68 hp 1.0 VTi/PureTech, failure of the ignition coils or spark plugs occurs occasionally. It shows up as jerking when accelerating and an engine warning light. It can appear even at low mileage and is fixed without touching the engine.
More faults with oil consumption on other engines and cars
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequent2.0/2.2 D-4DWarped cylinder head gasket and oil consumption on the 2.2 D-4DYes: the 2.2-litre block (2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV D-CAT) has numerous documented cases of warped cylinder head gaskets and oil consumption or dilution in the Avensis, RAV4, Auris, Corolla Verso and Verso, with repairs that sometimes require replacing the engine.Appears at around 40,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.2 and 1.4 TSIPiston breakage and oil consumption in the 1.4 TSI twinchargerThe 1.4 TSI twincharger (turbo and supercharger) built up to 2012 can crack the pistons between the rings, with oil consumption, misfires and loss of compression. Volkswagen strengthened the pistons and rings on the 2012 CTHD engines.
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.2 TCeExcessive oil consumption and engine failure1.2 TCe and 1.2 DIG-T engines built from 2012 to mid-2016 can burn more than 1 litre of oil per 1,000 km because the piston rings do not seal properly; carbon damages the valves and the engine can fail. There was no recall: the dealer network reprograms and replaces rings or the engine.Repair: €5,000–€10,000
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.33 Dual VVT-iExcessive oil consumption from piston wearYes: 1.33 Dual VVT-i (1NR-FE) units built before 2013 can use far more oil than normal because of a factory defect in the pistons, acknowledged by Toyota in a technical bulletin. In the most serious cases it ends in engine replacement. Toyota corrected it with revised parts from 2013.Appears at around 130,000 km
- High severityFrequency: Very frequent1.2 PureTechExcessive oil consumption from carbon on the piston rings or oil separator failureThe 2014 to 2023 1.2 PureTech turbos can use too much oil: those from 2014-2018 through carbon blocking the piston rings and those from 2018-2023 through a defective oil separator. Stellantis considers more than 0.3 l per 1,000 km abnormal and includes it in its cover.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.0 TSI / TFSIHigh oil consumptionIt is the most repeated complaint on first-batch EA888s (2008-2012) and still appears, to a lesser extent, in later generations. The engine needs topping up between services with no visible leak or obvious smoke at first.Repair (garage): €1,500–€4,000
