PSA / Stellantis 1.2 PureTech (EB2)Oil consumption

Excessive oil consumption from carbon on the piston rings or oil separator failure on the 1.2 PureTech

The 2014 to 2023 1.2 PureTech turbos can use too much oil: those from 2014-2018 through carbon blocking the piston rings and those from 2018-2023 through a defective oil separator. Stellantis considers more than 0.3 l per 1,000 km abnormal and includes it in its cover.[1][2][3]

Why this rating?

High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.

Frequency very frequent: Stellantis acknowledges it: it includes it in its extended cover, changed its oil recommendation and published specific repair procedures. Peugeot admitted in 2026 that it mainly affected the first generation (2014 to mid-2018).[1][2][3][4]

Symptoms

Why it happens

On Euro 6.1 engines (April 2014 to July 2018), the piston rings get dirty and seize with carbon in certain uses, above all urban driving with repeated cold and hot cycles, and stop scraping oil properly off the cylinder walls.[1][2][7]

On Euro 6.2 and 6.3 engines (July 2018 to February 2023), the oil separator has a defect: its membrane degrades and lets oil through into the intake.[1][5]

If it is not repaired: The engine burns oil and produces more carbon, which encourages knocking and spark plug failure. If the cylinders get scored, Stellantis says the cylinder block has to be replaced.[1][4][6]

Includes: Depending on the case: piston cleaning, oil separator, pistons or cylinder block.[1][3]

There are no published prices in Spain. The piston cleaning treatment takes more than 3 workshop hours and, if the cylinders are scored, the block has to be replaced. The repair falls under Stellantis cover if its conditions are met.

Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs

How to check for it before buying a used car

  • Ask about oil consumption and check the level before and after the test drive; if the seller tops it up often, be wary.
  • Ask for the invoices for the consumption test or the repair (piston cleaning, separator or block) if it has already been done.[1]
  • Smoke from the exhaust when accelerating after a spell idling is a sign it is burning oil.[5]

How to prevent it

  • Change the oil often and to the correct standard: Stellantis moved to 5W-30 partly to reduce consumption and carbon.[4]
  • Alternate short journeys with longer ones so the engine reaches temperature; cold and hot cycles encourage carbon.[2]
  • Check the oil level frequently to spot abnormal consumption early.

Recalls, campaigns and claims

  • Extended warrantyStellantis · January 2024

    Oil consumption cover (January 2024)

Repair of excessive oil consumption at 100% up to 5 years or 100,000 km and parts only between 5 and 8 years or 150,000 km; in 2024-2025 it was folded into the 10 years or 180,000 km cover.[3][8][9]

  • Technical campaignStellantis · 20 February 2024 · Ref. Norma FPW9.55535/03

Recommended oil change to 5W-30 (February 2024)

1.2 PureTech turbo 110 and 130 hp Euro 6.1 built up to August 2018: the aftersales network replaces the 0W-30 (standard B71 2312) with a 5W-30 to reduce oil consumption, belt degradation and knocking from carbon.[4]

  • Technical campaignStellantis · May 2024

New oil consumption repair procedure (May 2024)

Euro 6.1: two-stage aerosol piston cleaning and spark plug replacement; if that is not enough, oil separator and cylinder inspection, with block replacement if they are scored. Euro 6.2/6.3: oil separator replacement.[1]

What owners say

Frequently asked questions

How much oil is it normal for a 1.2 PureTech to use?

The Stellantis procedure considers consumption above 0.30 litres per 1,000 km non-compliant. To measure it, the workshop drains the engine, adds exactly 3.25 litres, about 1,000 km are driven and what remains is measured.[1]

What oil should I use in a 1.2 PureTech?

On the 110 and 130 hp Euro 6.1 turbos built up to August 2018, in February 2024 Stellantis replaced the 0W-30 (B71 2312) with a 5W-30 to the FPW9.55535/03 standard. On the rest, follow the maintenance plan for your VIN.[4][10]

Can it be fixed without replacing the engine?

A piston cleaning (more than 3 workshop hours) is almost always tried first or, on Euro 6.2/6.3, a separator replacement. The block only has to be replaced if the cylinders are scored.[1]

Why does it affect city cars more?

As Stellantis and Peugeot executives explained in 2026, carbon on the piston rings depends more on the type of use than on mileage: short journeys with repeated cold and hot cycles encourage it.[2]
