PSA/Ford 1.6 HDi, e-HDi, TDCi and BlueHDi (DV6)Timing belt
Timing belt failure and premature wear on the 1.6 HDi
Why this rating?
High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.
Frequency very frequent: It is a defect acknowledged by the manufacturer: full cover up to 120 months or 240,000 km and a preventive action from April 2014 on 43,825 Citroën C5 and C4 Picasso, 8,500 Peugeot 508, 39,700 3008 and 22,100 5008. In addition, PSA dealt with belt rubbing noises on the 8V engines until 2014, and on the 16V engines rust and noises from the belt and tensioners are documented.[1][2][3][4]
Symptoms
- The engine stops while running when the belt breaks.[1]Engine stalls: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
- After the failure the engine will not start again.[1]Hard to start: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- A rubbing noise or the noise of a poorly tensioned belt in the timing area.[1][3]Chain noise: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
L'argus explains that the crankshaft sprocket wore the belt prematurely; that is why the repair and the preventive action include that sprocket as well as the kit.[1][2]
On engines that were noisy because of incorrect belt tension (until October 2011), PSA replaced the kit, sprocket and crankshaft pulley bolt.[1]
On the 16V engines, rust on the belt and tensioner pulleys caused noises and preventive replacements.[2][4]
If it is not repaired: The 1.6 is an interference engine: if the belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons and the documented repair includes camshaft, sprocket, springs and tappets as well as the kit.[1][5]
Affected cars and years
The failures are concentrated in the 112/115 hp built from 1/10/2010 to 30/9/2011. The belt rubbing noises affect the 8V engines (92, 112 and 115 hp) until June 2014, and on the 16V engines there was rust on the belt and pulleys, with preventive replacements on the first 207 and 308 models.[1][2][3][4]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Replacement of the timing kit with water pump and crankshaft sprocket; after a failure, also camshaft, tappets and springs.[1]
We have not found reliable published prices in Spain either for preventive replacement or for repair after a failure. On cars from the affected production, PSA covered the repair up to 120 months or 240,000 km.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- If it is a 112/115 hp built between October 2010 and September 2011 (3008, 5008, 508, C4 Picasso, C5...), ask the official service to check with the chassis number whether the belt and sprocket change was done.[1]
- Insist on the invoice for the last timing kit change. On the BlueHDi, the official schedule sets it at 175,000 km or 10 years (165,000 km in severe use).[6]
- With the engine running, listen for rubbing or humming at the timing cover.[1][3]

What owners say
Frequently asked questions
How often is the 1.6 BlueHDi belt changed?
According to Peugeot's maintenance schedule for the 308 1.6 BlueHDi 100, every 175,000 km or 10 years in normal use and every 165,000 km or 10 years in severe use, together with the water pump.[6]
What happens if the belt breaks?
The engine stops and will not start again. Being an interference engine, the camshaft and tappets are damaged, so the repair is far more expensive than preventive replacement.[1][5]
Is my car affected by the 2014 action?
Only the 112/115 hp 1.6 HDi/e-HDi built between 1 October 2010 and 30 September 2011, mainly the 3008, 5008, 508, C4 Picasso and C5. The official service can check with the chassis number.[1]

Other 1.6 HDi faults
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentTurboTurbo failure through lack of lubrication (carbon deposits and union filter)On the 16-valve 1.6 HDi/TDCi engines (2004-2011) the turbo can seize because carbon deposits from the oil clog the mesh filter in the union that feeds it. It is a serious, repeat fault: if only the turbo is replaced without cleaning the circuit, it fails again.Repair (garage): €700–€1,050
- Medium severityFrequency: Very frequentEmissions controlAdBlue tank and pump fault (1.6 BlueHDi)The 1.6 BlueHDi engines (2013-2019) suffer from the AdBlue tank defect of Stellantis diesels: an emissions warning appears with a countdown until starting is prevented. Replacing the tank, with the integrated pump, costs over €1,000 (price in Spain), but there is an extended warranty of up to 8 years.Repair: €1,000–€1,200
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionLeaks at the injector washers and carbon build-up in the cylinder headIt is common for the copper washers of the 1.6 HDi injectors to stop sealing: the engine blows gases, carbon forms around the injector and soot gets into the oil. It is cheap to repair, but if left it contaminates the oil and is one of the causes of turbo failure.Repair (garage): €110–€310
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonInjectionJerking and injection faults on the 1.6 e-HDi 112/115 (Continental injectors)The 112 and 115 hp 1.6 HDi/e-HDi built between late 2011 and February 2014 can jerk and turn on the engine warning light because of an internal electrical defect in their Continental injectors. PSA covered their replacement depending on age and mileage.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlAdditive-fed particulate filter (Eolys cerine): depleted additive and cloggingThe DPF on the 1.6 HDi and BlueHDi works with an additive (cerine) that runs out at 80,000-120,000 km and has to be topped up for around €100-120 (price in Spain). With a lot of town use the filter clogs and the warning appears; if it is left, a new DPF costs around €1,500.Repair (garage): €100–€1,500Appears at around 80,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlDirty EGR valve and EGR cooler leaksThe 1.6 HDi EGR valve gets dirty easily, especially in town use, and causes jerking and stalling at idle. On the 8V engines the EGR cooler also fails, consuming coolant with no visible leaks.
More faults with the timing belt on other engines and cars
- Critical severityFrequency: Very frequent1.2 PureTechOil-bath timing belt degradationThe oil-bath belt on the 1.2 PureTech (2012-2025) can swell and shed debris that blocks the oil pump pick-up; without lubrication, the engine can be destroyed. Stellantis covers it up to 10 years or 180,000 km and asks for it to be changed every 100,000 km or 6 years.Repair (garage): €400–€800
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.0 EcoBoostDegradation of the timing belt running in oilYes: the 1.0 EcoBoost's timing belt runs in oil and can degrade over the years, shedding bits of rubber that block the oil pump and seize the engine without warning. The NHTSA is investigating the case in the United States and Ford has shortened the recommended replacement interval.Repair (garage): €800–€1,200
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.5 / 2.0 EcoBlueDegradation of the wet timing belt (2.0 EcoBlue)Yes: the 2.0 EcoBlue debuted a timing belt that runs bathed in oil on Ford's diesels. Over the years it can degrade and shed debris that affects the lubrication circuit, with a risk of seizure. A roundup by Autopista.es places it in the Focus, Kuga, Transit and Transit/Tourneo Custom.
- Critical severityFrequency: Common1.0 / 1.5 VTEC TurboEngine failure caused by the wet timing beltYes: the 1.0 VTEC Turbo (P10A2) uses an oil-bath timing belt that degrades over time, blocks the lubrication circuit and can destroy the engine completely. Fiches-auto.fr documents several cases in the Honda Civic between 72,000 and 114,000 km.Appears at around 72,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonD4/D5Auxiliary belt breakage that takes the timing belt with it (5-cylinder)Yes: on the 2.4/2.0 5-cylinder (D5244T/D5204, 2001-2016), several owners describe the auxiliary belt breaking and taking out or damaging the timing belt, with the engine destroyed. It happens in the S60 and XC60 between 74,000 and 119,000 km, and in one case not even the extended warranty covered it.
- Critical severityFrequency: Occasional1.0 PureTechDegradation of the oil-bath timing beltThe 1.0 VTi/PureTech 68 uses the same oil-bath timing belt as the 1.2. Over time it can degrade and shed debris that blocks the oil pump strainer, with a risk of serious failure. It has not had a recall, but it falls under Stellantis's extended warranty.Repair (garage): €400–€800
