2.0 Ingenium diésel engine: faults and reliability

Jaguar Land Rover 2.0 Ingenium diésel (204DTD/204DTA) · Land Rover and Jaguar

The 2.0 Ingenium diesel is the four-cylinder diesel engine that Jaguar Land Rover designed from scratch and has fitted since 2015 to the Range Rover Evoque, the Discovery Sport and several Jaguars. Several sources repeatedly document timing chain stretch, balance shaft wear, turbo failures and fuel dilution of the oil, so it is worth checking thoroughly before buying.[1][2]

Which 2.0 Ingenium diésel versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • It shares the block and a good part of the documented weak points of the whole Ingenium diesel family - timing chain, balance shaft bearings, turbo and fuel dilution of the oil - so it should be checked carefully whatever its specific power output.[3][4][5]

  • As it shares its block, timing drive and lubrication system with the rest of the Ingenium diesel family, it inherits the same risk of timing chain, balance shaft bearing and fuel dilution problems; there are fewer owner reports specific to this variant because it is a minority, but chain and engine failures are also documented on higher-output F-Pace units.[6]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 2.0 Ingenium diésel

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentTimingTiming chain stretchYes: the timing chain on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel can slip or stretch prematurely and put the engine out of time, with a risk of serious failure. It is documented on the Evoque, Discovery Sport, XE, E-Pace and F-Pace, with engine failures between 90,000 and 130,000 km in several owner reports.Repair (garage): €4,000–€7,000Appears at around 90,000 km
  2. 2High severityFrequency: Very frequentTurboTurbocharger failureYes: according to several sources, the turbo is the component that causes the most faults on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel. It fails across a very wide mileage range (from around 35,000 to over 140,000 km) and, if it breaks up inside, it can send oil or metal into the engine and destroy it.Repair (garage): €2,600–€3,000Appears at around 35,000 km
  3. 3High severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlFuel dilution of the oil linked to particulate filter regenerationsYes: on short trips and in urban use, the Ingenium diesel's particulate filter does not always complete regeneration, and some of the diesel injected to burn off the soot ends up mixing with the engine oil, which reduces its ability to lubricate.
  4. 4High severityFrequency: CommonCylinder head and blockBalance shaft bearing wearYes: the balance shaft bearings on the Ingenium diesel wear relatively often and produce a metallic whine when accelerating; if ignored, they can release particles into the oil circuit and damage the turbo or the engine bearings.
  5. 5Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlEGR fouling and AdBlue system faultsThe EGR valve gets clogged with soot as on any modern diesel, and the Ingenium diesel's AdBlue system fails fairly often according to several sources, with warnings that can end up preventing the engine from starting if they are not dealt with.

What the 2.0 Ingenium diésel is

The 2.0 Ingenium diesel (technical name AJ200D) is a 1,999 cc in-line four-cylinder engine with twin overhead camshafts, a timing chain, a turbocharger and common rail injection. Jaguar Land Rover designed and built it entirely in-house - without relying on Ford, PSA or BMW engines as in earlier generations - and presented it in 2015. Depending on the version, it produces between 150 and 241 hp, with maximum torque of between 380 and 500 Nm; the most powerful variant adds a second turbo stage.[1][2]

Since its launch it has powered most of the mid-size and compact diesel models from Jaguar and Land Rover: at Jaguar, the XE, XF, E-Pace and F-Pace; at Land Rover, the Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque since the 2015-2016 update. The Ingenium diesel family has also reached the Range Rover Velar and the new-generation Defender, although these last two are not covered on this page.[1]

It is an engine with a mixed reputation. Several reliability guides in French and German, as well as the English-language specialist press, repeatedly document the same pattern of faults across different models and years: a timing chain that stretches or slips prematurely, balance shaft bearings that wear, turbos that fail and fuel dilution of the oil linked to particulate filter regenerations. A German source notes that a good part of these problems eased from the 2020 models, coinciding with the introduction of the 48-volt mild-hybrid versions, but the English-language specialist press was still reporting complaints about Ingenium engines in 2026.[2][7][8]

Technical data[1]

What changed between versions

  1. since 2015

    Ingenium diesel single-turbo 150-200 hp (204DTD, 2015-present)

Base 1,999 cc block with a single turbocharger, used in most of the entry-level and mid-range diesel engines in the line-up: 150, 163, 180 and 200 hp depending on the model and ECU tune. It is the most widespread variant of the whole Ingenium diesel family.[1]

  2. since 2015

    Ingenium diesel twin-turbo 240 hp (204DTA, 2015-present)

The higher-output version of the same 1,999 cc base, with a second turbo stage to reduce lag at low revs and reach 241 hp and 500 Nm. The sources we consulted do not give an introduction year different from the rest of the family, nor the exact reason for the difference between the 204DTD and 204DTA engine codes.[1]
