Volkswagen / Audi 2.0 FSI atmosférico (EA113)Ignition coils and spark plugs
Ignition coil failure on the 2.0 FSI
Why this rating?
Medium severity: It can leave you stranded or get worse if ignored, without destroying the engine.
Frequency common: Coil failure appears in owner testimonies from four different models: the Golf V (coil needing replacement, engine running on three cylinders), the Passat B6 (coils replaced at 5,000 km and again at 105,000 km), the Seat Leon II (coil warning at 90,000 km) and the Seat Altea (coils failing almost as soon as it was bought and again a year later). Although each individual source comes from owners rather than the specialist press, the pattern repeats consistently across several models and generations, which makes it look like a known, widespread problem rather than an isolated case; we do not raise it to "muy-frecuente" because we have found neither incidence figures specific to the engine nor a manufacturer campaign acknowledging it.[1][2][3][4][5]
Symptoms
- The engine warning light comes on when a coil fails.[1]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Rough running or the engine running on fewer cylinders than it should, according to a Golf V testimony ("tourne sur 3 cylindres").[1]Jerking: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Unstable idle right after starting and, in an Audi A3 8P, difficulty restarting the engine when hot (several attempts before it starts).[1][6]Hard to start: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
The coils on this engine lose insulation with heat and age, an electrical wear typical of petrol engines of this age.[1]
On a Volkswagen Passat B6, one owner documents coil replacement at 5,000 km and again at 105,000 km, which suggests that some units can fail very early.[2]
On the Seat Leon II, one owner mentions a recall ("rappel") of the ignition coils at 90,000 km; we have found no official Volkswagen or Seat campaign confirming it, so we treat it as a case reported by the owner rather than a verified campaign.[3]
On the Seat Altea, one owner describes the coils failing "practically as soon as I bought it" and again a year later.[4]
If it is not repaired: A sustained misfire can damage the catalytic converter: the owner of a Passat B6 with this engine documents a catalytic converter replaced at 112,000 km after repeated coil problems.[2]
Affected cars and years
The fault is documented in testimonies from cars with different codes of this engine, which points to an ignition system problem common to the whole family rather than to a particular revision.[1][2][3][4]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Replacement of the affected coil or coils, including labour.[1]
We have not found a published quote in Spain specific to this engine.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Start the engine from cold and check that it does not run jerkily and that the engine light does not come on in the first minute.
- If possible, switch the engine off when hot after a journey and start it again: several attempts before it starts may point to this problem.[6]
Parts needed
The part or kit that fixes this fault, according to the sources.
2.0 FSI ignition coil
Replaced, normally per cylinder, when it stops delivering the spark required and causes misfires.
2.0 FSI spark plug set
Changed together with the coils or at the service interval so as not to strain the ignition system.

How to prevent it
- Change the spark plugs at the interval set by the manufacturer: worn plugs put more strain on the coils.
Recalls, campaigns and claims
As of 27 September 2026, we have no record of recalls, campaigns or extended manufacturer warranties for this fault. Check with an official dealer using the chassis (VIN) number: they will tell you whether the car has any outstanding campaign.
What owners say
Frequently asked questions
Is it the same as a cold-start problem?
Not exactly: we have found no separate, documented cold-start mechanism for this engine. The owner testimonies we have opened describe an unstable idle and difficulty restarting the engine when hot, symptoms that fit a coil or spark plug fault better than a cause specific to cold weather.[1][6]
At what mileage do the coils fail?
There is no reliable general figure: the documented cases range from 5,000 km to over 100,000 km on the same car, so they do not allow a typical mileage to be set.[2]

Other 2.0 FSI faults
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonIntakeCarbon build-up on the intake valvesBecause petrol is injected directly into the chamber, the 2.0 FSI does not wash the intake valves the way a port-injection engine does. Gebrauchtwagenberater.de documents carbon build-up in the Audi A3 8P and Passat B6, with higher consumption and less power as the mileage rises.
- Low severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlBlocked EGR valveOn the 2.0 FSI the EGR valve gets stuck or blocked fairly often, ending in a fault with the exhaust gas recirculation valve. It is a manageable repair with no risk to the engine, but it should be confirmed with diagnostics.
More faults with the ignition coils on other engines and cars
- Medium severityFrequency: Very frequent1.4 and 1.6 16vIgnition coil failureThe individual ignition coils are the most-cited fault of the K4J/K4M in the European Renault versions: they fail frequently and cause jerking, loss of power and the engine warning light coming on. It is a cheap electrical part to replace, not internal engine damage.Appears at around 30,000 km
- High severityFrequency: Occasional1.2 PureTechSpark plug breakage on the 130 hp 1.2 PureTech turboOn the 130 hp 1.2 PureTech/e-THP turbo the original spark plugs can break; if a fragment falls into the cylinder it can damage the engine. Autojournal cites a 2015 recall to replace them on the 308 II.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonBMW N43/N46Injector, ignition coil and NOx sensor failures (N43)On the direct-injection BMW N43, failures of the injectors, ignition coils (mainly in 2007-2008 units, now rare after a BMW service action) and the NOx sensor of its lean-burn combustion have been documented. The indirect-injection N46 does not have that sensor and does not suffer these failures.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonBMW N54/N55Oil in the spark plug wells from the rocker cover gasketOn the N54 and N55 the rocker cover gasket hardens with age and lets oil seep into the spark plug wells. Guides treat it as a known fault: it smells of burnt oil and can damage spark plugs and coils.
- Medium severityFrequency: Common1.0/1.2/1.4 EcotecIgnition coil failureThe ignition coils on this engine fail fairly often in the Corsa, Astra, Meriva and Adam, causing jerking, the engine warning light and, in the clearest cases, the engine running on one cylinder fewer; the garage fixes it by replacing the affected coil.Repair (garage): €150–€480Appears at around 15,000 km
- Medium severityFrequency: Common1.4 TurboIgnition coil failureThe ignition coils of the 1.4 Turbo fail fairly often on the Mokka and Meriva B, with jerking, occasional loss of power and the engine warning light on; the garage fixes it by replacing the affected coil or coils.Repair (garage): €400–€600Appears at around 47,000 km
