Noise when starting the car (squeal, knock or clicking): causes and the faults that trigger it

It depends on how it sounds and when. A high-pitched squeal usually comes from the auxiliary belt or its tensioner; a clack-clack when turning the key, from a weak battery or the starter motor; and a metallic knocking with the engine already running, from the timing or from play in the top end of the engine. If the knocking lasts more than a few seconds, it is best to stop and have it checked as soon as possible.[1][2][3][4][5]

40 documented faults cause it in 39 engines. The most important:

What it means

A squeal, a metallic knock or a rapid clicking when you turn the ignition or in the first seconds after starting can come from the auxiliary belt, the battery, the starter motor or the top end of the engine (timing, tappets). Noting when it sounds and whether it goes away as the engine warms up helps tell them apart.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

What to do now

Garage soon

Note whether the noise happens when you turn the key or with the engine already running, and whether it disappears within seconds or persists. A metallic knock that lasts more than a few seconds or repeats every day deserves a garage inspection as soon as possible.

Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

  1. 1. Auxiliary belt, tensioner or pulleys

    Common cause

The high-pitched squeal is the typical noise of the auxiliary belt. Diariomotor takes it as a sign that the belt is slipping, and RACE explains that it indicates there may be a worn idler or tensioner, and that it usually appears at the end of the belt's service life. RACE adds that a worn or slack belt squeals with a high-pitched sound.[1][6][7]

Faults with with the crankshaft pulley and engine mounts

  2. 2. Weak battery when turning the key

    Common cause

If a clicking or metallic noise sounds when you turn the key and the engine does not start, RACE explains that the starter motor receives some power from the battery, but not enough to start the engine. Cold makes it worse: Autopista points out that low temperatures punish the battery and advises thinking about replacing it if it is more than four years old or shows signs of weakness.[4][8]

Faults with with the 12 V battery

  3. 3. Worn starter motor or solenoid

    Common cause

RACE attributes the clicking when trying to start to the Bendix drive, which tries to engage the starter motor but lacks the strength to turn the engine. Behind it lies wear of the brushes, shaft and bearings, quicker with urban use, and the symptom can be a start that works sometimes and not others. If you only hear the starter motor spinning, without the clicking, the fault is in the solenoid.[2][9]

Faults with with the alternator and starter motor

  4. 4. Stretched timing chain or belt, or slack tensioner

    Possible cause

RACE explains that when the chain slackens, it knocks against the cover, and that a poorly designed chain or one with unsuitable oil can stretch more than the tensioner can compensate for. Of the timing belt it says that it usually gives no symptoms, except a knocking noise against its cover when it slackens. If it breaks, the valves and pistons collide and the damage is very serious. The chain rattle on starting has its own guide on the site: "Metallic timing noise on starting".[10]

Faults with with the timing chainFaults with with the timing belt

  5. 5. Hydraulic tappets and play in the top end of the engine

    Possible cause

With hydraulic tappets, the oil drains away when the car has been standing for a while, and according to Wikipedia the valve train can rattle loudly on starting for a second or two without being a problem. If the noise does not go away within a couple of minutes, it can indicate a blocked oil passage or a tappet collapsed through wear. RACE adds that excessive rattling means there is play between moving parts (valves, piston rings, timing chain, pistons or connecting rods).[3][5]

  6. 6. Thick oil when cold or badly degraded oil

    Possible cause

Autopista points out that when cold the oil thickens and the engine components are less prepared, and recommends a multigrade oil that flows well when cold. RACE warns that if oil is lacking or badly degraded, play between components appears quickly.[3][8]

Depending on what you notice

Noise when starting the car cold

When cold the oil thickens and the engine is less prepared (Autopista). A timing rattle lasting a second or two can be normal with hydraulic tappets; if it lasts more than a couple of minutes or always recurs, it indicates a problem (Wikipedia), and RACE advises stopping the car as soon as possible in the event of excessive rattling, even if no warning light is on.[3][5][8]

Squealing when starting the car

A high-pitched squeal usually comes from the auxiliary belt: Diariomotor takes it as a sign that it is slipping and RACE associates it with a worn idler or tensioner or a worn belt. Cracks or fraying in the belt are signs of wear, and replacing it costs around €100 including labour according to RACE.[1][6][7]

It goes clack clack clack on starting

If the clicking sounds when you turn the key and the engine does not start, RACE attributes it to a starter motor without the strength to engage or a battery that does not give it enough power. If the engine starts and then a metallic knocking sounds, RACE links it to play between moving parts or a slack timing chain knocking against the cover.[2][3][4][10]

You only hear the starter motor spinning, without the usual knock

RACE explains that the normal clicking is the pinion coming out after the solenoid acts. If you only hear the starter motor spinning without that clicking, the problem is in the solenoid; the usual remedy is to replace the starter motor and solenoid assembly, because they form a compact unit.[9]

What to check first

  1. Pay attention to when it sounds: when turning the key (points to the battery or starter motor), straight after starting with the engine already running (timing, tappets or belt) or continuously. Note whether it disappears within a few seconds or when the engine is warm.[2][4][5]
  2. If it goes a fast clack clack and the engine does not turn or turns weakly, check the battery (Autopista advises replacing one that is more than four years old) and press the clutch when starting to reduce the load on the starter motor.[4][8]
  3. Look at the auxiliary belt with the naked eye: cracks or fraying are signs of wear. A squeal indicates that it is slipping or that an idler or the tensioner is failing.[1][6]
  4. Check the oil level and use the one the manufacturer recommends, respecting the change intervals: with little oil or badly degraded oil, play appears quickly.[3][8]
  5. If the metallic knocking lasts more than a few seconds or recurs every morning, ask for the chain and its tensioner and the condition of the tappets to be checked. Do not wait for a warning light to come on: RACE warns that excessive rattling may not light any.[3][5][10]
  6. Record a video of the noise with the engine cold and describe to the mechanic when it appears and how long it lasts.

Can I keep driving?

Urgency: Garage soon

It depends on the noise. With a belt squeal, RACE says that if the belt is still in place and the journey is short, you can reach a garage; if it breaks, you lose power steering, air conditioning and the alternator and the engine may overheat (Diariomotor), and RACE puts the fault it can cause at around €1,500. A clack-clack when turning the key points to the battery or starter motor: it can leave you stranded, and bump-starting with a badly worn timing belt can break it (RACE). A metallic knocking that lasts more than a few seconds is the most serious: RACE advises stopping the car as soon as possible, even if no warning light appears, and warns that a broken chain causes serious damage.[1][2][3][6][10]

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for the car to make a noise when starting cold?

A very brief rattle can be: according to Wikipedia, on engines with hydraulic tappets the valve train can rattle loudly on starting because the oil drains away while the car is standing, and it is not a problem if it lasts one or two seconds and disappears within a couple of minutes. Excessive rattling or rattling that persists indicates play between parts, and RACE advises stopping the car as soon as possible.[3][5]

Why does it go clack clack when I turn the key and not start?

According to RACE, the starter motor receives some power from the battery but not enough to turn the engine, or the Bendix drive tries to engage without enough force. In both cases it is best to check the battery first and then the starter motor.[2][4]

Why does the car squeal when starting?

The squeal usually comes from the auxiliary belt. Diariomotor interprets it as a sign that it is slipping and RACE associates it with a worn idler or tensioner, which wear the belt. It should be checked before it breaks.[1][6]

What happens if the timing chain or belt breaks?

According to RACE, if it breaks with the car running, timing is lost and the valves and pistons collide; the engine makes a loud noise, stalls and the warning lights come on. It is possibly one of the most expensive repairs there is.[10]

How much does it cost to fix a noise on starting?

It depends on the origin. According to RACE, replacing the drive belt costs around €100 including labour, replacing a starter motor between €300 and €600, and the solenoid, part only, between €20 and €60. We have not found published figures for the chain or the tappets.[1][2][9]

Can you bump-start the car if the starter motor fails?

RACE says it is possible in second gear, but warns that a badly worn timing belt may not withstand the initial shock, whereas the starter motor acts more gently.[2]
