How it works and why it fails

Alternator and starter motor

The starter motor turns the engine over when you turn the key, and the alternator recharges the battery while you drive. On 48 V mild hybrids, the two are combined in a starter-alternator. With Start&Stop, the starter motor works many more times, and some models have had campaigns over relays or cables with a fire risk.

What to do

If the engine is slow to start with a good battery, you hear a click without it turning over or the battery warning light comes on while driving, check the charging system. An alternator that is not charging leaves the car with a flat battery within a few kilometres.
