Jaguar F-Pace problems (2016–today)

We have documented 2 engines and 1 gearbox for the Jaguar F-Pace; the 2.0 Ingenium diésel and the ZF 8HP gearbox have high or critical severity faults. The safest option is the ZF 8HP gearbox in its 2nd generation (2014-2017) version, with a «Buy» verdict.[1][2][3]

Outside the engine: Outside the engine, Jaguar F-Pace owner testimonials point mainly to electronics and infotainment and, with fewer cases, to rear axle or differential wear. They come from fiches-auto.fr testimonials, not from an independent study.[4][5]

Jaguar F-Pace rating: acceptable reliability

Calculated using only 11 documented faults and their sources: the most serious and frequent faults weigh more. Limited evidence: it is based on few sources or few documented faults, so it is not included in the rankings. Having few documented faults does not mean it is reliable: it may simply be little studied. How it is calculated

Verdict for the versions it uses

  • It shares the block and a good part of the documented weak points of the whole Ingenium diesel family - timing chain, balance shaft bearings, turbo and fuel dilution of the oil - so it should be checked carefully whatever its specific power output.[6][7][8]

  • As it shares its block, timing drive and lubrication system with the rest of the Ingenium diesel family, it inherits the same risk of timing chain, balance shaft bearing and fuel dilution problems; there are fewer owner reports specific to this variant because it is a minority, but chain and engine failures are also documented on higher-output F-Pace units.[4]

Faults that affect the F-Pace

  1. Critical severityFrequency: Very frequentTimingTiming chain stretchYes: the timing chain on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel can slip or stretch prematurely and put the engine out of time, with a risk of serious failure. It is documented on the Evoque, Discovery Sport, XE, E-Pace and F-Pace, with engine failures between 90,000 and 130,000 km in several owner reports.Repair (garage): €4,000–€7,000Appears at around 90,000 km
  2. High severityFrequency: Very frequentTurboTurbocharger failureYes: according to several sources, the turbo is the component that causes the most faults on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel. It fails across a very wide mileage range (from around 35,000 to over 140,000 km) and, if it breaks up inside, it can send oil or metal into the engine and destroy it.Repair (garage): €2,600–€3,000Appears at around 35,000 km
  3. High severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlFuel dilution of the oil linked to particulate filter regenerationsYes: on short trips and in urban use, the Ingenium diesel's particulate filter does not always complete regeneration, and some of the diesel injected to burn off the soot ends up mixing with the engine oil, which reduces its ability to lubricate.
  4. High severityFrequency: CommonCylinder head and blockBalance shaft bearing wearYes: the balance shaft bearings on the Ingenium diesel wear relatively often and produce a metallic whine when accelerating; if ignored, they can release particles into the oil circuit and damage the turbo or the engine bearings.
  5. Medium severityFrequency: CommonEmissions controlEGR fouling and AdBlue system faultsThe EGR valve gets clogged with soot as on any modern diesel, and the Ingenium diesel's AdBlue system fails fairly often according to several sources, with warnings that can end up preventing the engine from starting if they are not dealt with.

  • 2nd generation (2014-2017)2014–2017 · 8HP50, 8HP70, 8HP75, 845RE

    Buy

It is the most widespread version and the one with the most known mileage: in the analyses of several models (BMW X3, BMW X5, Audi A6) gearbox faults are a minority of the total accounts, although occasional jerking is still documented and, less often, mechatronic faults or leaks. It is worth checking the history, but there is no systemic defect that argues against buying.[1][2][3]

  • 3rd generation, with electrification (from 2018)since 2018 · 8HP51, 8HP76, 8HP95, 850RE

    With caution

There is less accumulated mileage and fewer accounts than with the earlier versions, and on plug-in hybrid models there are added electronic warnings shared between the engine and the gearbox that complicate diagnosis. There are no known systemic defects, but there is less track record to confirm it.[9]

Faults that affect the F-Pace

  1. High severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsMechatronic failure as the gearbox ages (sometimes with reverse)Yes, although in a minority of cases: there are documented ZF 8HP mechatronic failures on BMW after 120,000-130,000 km, costing €1,400 to €3,500, and also control unit or electronic selector faults on Audi and Land Rover.Repair: €1,400–€3,500
  2. Medium severityFrequency: CommonTransmissionJerking and hesitation when changing gear, sometimes needing reprogrammingYes: on BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo there are accounts of jerking, hesitation or harsh shifts with the ZF 8HP. It is usually due to ageing oil or the calibration of the mechatronics, and the dealer often fixes it -not always first time- by reprogramming the gearbox control unit.
  3. Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationOil leaks from the gearbox gaskets or sumpYes: on the BMW 1 Series and the Jaguar F-Pace there are accounts of oil leaks from the ZF 8HP gearbox gaskets, in one case already at 40,000 km. If it is not repaired soon, the loss of pressure can speed up internal wear and lead to the jerking or mechatronic failure of the related faults.Repair (garage): €1,000–€2,000

    With caution

The sources consulted describe it as the quietest Ingenium and document no serious faults, but there is manufacturer technical information on chain noise on some 2.0 petrols, and one workshop points to the tensioner in the first 2019 cars: listen to a cold start and ask for the history.[11][12][13]

  • It is a recent engine and we have found no documented faults in open sources; a British guide considers it more robust than the four-cylinder, but without high-mileage data the sensible course is to keep the warranty and the maintenance history up to date.[14]

Faults that affect the F-Pace

  1. Medium severityFrequency: RareTimingTiming chain and VCT unit noise on the 2.0 petrolSome 2.0 Ingenium petrol engines have shown a rattle around the timing chain, linked according to manufacturer technical information to the variable valve timing unit. It is a little-documented problem and far less widespread than on the diesel.
