1.5 D (TUD5) engine: faults and reliability

PSA 1.4 D and 1.5 D (TUD3 and TUD5) · Peugeot and Citroën

A small indirect-injection diesel, slow but simple, with a good reputation for durability once its early problems are behind it. Its documented weak point is the cylinder head gasket, with oil leaks that PSA corrected in stages between 1995 and 1998; other issues (high idle, pump leaks, glow plug connector) are occasional.[1][2][3]

Which 1.5 D (TUD5) versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 1.4 D 50 hp (TUD3Y, 1993-1994 on the 106)

    1993–1994 · 50 hp · TUD3Y, K9Y

    With caution

Caradisiac warns of a possible cylinder head gasket issue from 100,000-130,000 km and of excessive oil consumption up to July 1993 caused by a ring problem; L'argus recommends avoiding the 106's 1.4 D. Only buy it with the cylinder head gasket verified.[1][3]

  • 1.5 D 54-58 hp (TUD5: VJZ, VJY and VJX, 1994-2003)

    1994–2003 · 54–58 hp · TUD5, TUD5Y, VJX, VJY, VJZ

    With caution

Oil leaks from the cylinder head gasket and the crankshaft seal mainly affect cars built before July 1998, when Caradisiac places the definitive gasket on the 106; in fiches-auto's statistics the engine has few faults, and the most frequently repeated issue is the clutch.[1][7][8]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 1.5 D (TUD5) is

The TUD3 (1.4 D, 1,360 cc) and the TUD5 (1.5 D, 1,527 cc) are the indirect-injection diesels with pre-chamber and mechanical pump that PSA fitted to its small cars. The TUD3 used the aluminium block of the TU3 petrol engine with reinforced wet liners (hence its name) and was built between 1988 and 1994; the TUD5, with an iron block and aluminium cylinder head, replaced it in 1994.[4]

In the MotorFiable catalogue it is fitted to the Peugeot 106 (1.4 D from 1993 to 1994 and 1.5 D from 1994 to 2003) and the Citroën Saxo (1.5 D from 1996 to 2003). Wikipedia also lists it in the Citroën AX and ZX, in the Xsara sold in Portugal and in models from other brands, such as the Nissan Micra K11 or the Rover 115 D.[4][5][9]

The specialist press qualifies its good reputation: Caradisiac attributes the largest problems in the range to the 106's diesel, with two serious defects that no longer affect the cars that have survived, and L'argus recommends avoiding the 106's 1.4 D and 1.5 D because of their modest performance and cylinder head gasket problems.[1][3]

What changed between versions

  1. 1993–1994

    1.4 D 50 hp (TUD3Y, 1993-1994 on the 106)

1,360 cc, 50 hp version fitted to the Peugeot 106 with a Bosch VP 20 injection pump and no catalytic converter. The TUD3 was introduced in 1988 with the TU3's aluminium block and reinforced wet liners, and Wikipedia describes it as prone to early cylinder head gasket failures.[4][5]

  2. 1994–2003

    1.5 D 54-58 hp (TUD5: VJZ, VJY and VJX, 1994-2003)

1,527 cc with iron block and aluminium cylinder head, which replaced the TUD3 in 1994 and, according to Wikipedia, resolved its cylinder head gasket failures. In the 106, Wikipedia (de) gives 57 hp with catalytic converter between 1994 and 1996 (VJZ), 54 hp Euro 2 until 2000 (VJY) and the VJX Euro 3 from October 2000; French listings say 58 hp.[4][5][6]
