1.0, 1.4 and 1.6 8v EA111 engine: faults and reliability
Grupo Volkswagen 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6 de gasolina de 8 válvulas (EA111, Europa and Latinoamérica) · Volkswagen and Seat
Eight-valve petrol engines, simple, with a timing belt. For the European 1.0 and 1.4, sources only record isolated incidents, mainly ignition faults in damp weather on the 1.4. In Brazil, the 2008-2010 1.0 VHT of the Gol, Voyage and Fox suffered lubrication-related noise, an oil campaign with extended warranty and a software recall in 2009.[1][2][3][4]

1.0 8v 50 hp (AER, ALD, ALL, ANV, AUC; 1996-2005)
1996–2005 · 50 hp · AER, ALD, ALL, ANV, AUC
On fiches-auto.fr the Lupo 1.0 50 hp has 16 testimonies with isolated incidents (a head gasket, the thermostat, a dirty throttle body), and on Autocentrum the Lupo has 77 reviews of this engine with no engine faults among the most cited.[9][10]
- With caution
1.4 8v 55-60 hp (ABD, AKP, AEX, AKV, APQ, ANX, ANW; 1991-2005)
1991–2005 · 54–60 hp · ABD, AKP, AEX, AKV, APQ, ANX, ANW
On fiches-auto.fr the 60 hp Polo III 1.4 has 9 ignition faults and 8 oil leak or oil consumption cases out of 66 testimonies, and Autocentrum reports engine faults in damp weather on the 60 hp 1.4: check the coils and oil leaks before buying.[3][4]
- With caution
1.0 8v Mi and Total Flex (Brazilian EA-111, 1997-2008)
1997–2008 · 61–71 hp
The 2009-2013 campaigns and the court order refer to the 1.0 of the 2009 and 2010 model years, not to this earlier 1.0; the sources only mention coil and spark plug faults on the Fox and the thermostat housing on the Gol G3 and G4, so check both points.[1][11][12][13]
- With caution
1.0 8v VHT flex (EA-111, 2008-2022)
2008–2022 · 72–76 hp
In 2009 Volkswagen acknowledged a loss of lubrication in the 1.0 VHT of the Gol, Voyage and Fox, with an oil campaign and extended warranty, and in 2013 prosecutors in Rio Grande do Sul again called for inspections: buy only with an oil change history and proof the campaign was carried out.[1][11][14][15]
- With caution
1.6 8v Total Flex (Brazilian EA-111, 2003-2022)
2003–2022 · 101–104 hp
No campaign or ruling in the sources covers the 1.6; only Click Petróleo e Gás mentions it alongside the 1.0 VHT in the lubrication problem, without specifying whether it is 8-valve or substantiating the claim, and we have found no reliability studies of our own.[11][16]
Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.
Known faults of the 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6 8v EA111
Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).
- 1High severityFrequency: CommonLubricationEngine noise and premature wear from lubrication in the 1.0 VHTIn 2009 Volkswagen acknowledged that the 1.0 VHT of the Gol, Voyage and Fox made noise because of a loss of oil lubrication with ethanol. It ran an oil change campaign with extended warranty; in 2013 a court interim order, which Volkswagen says was revoked, called for checks for premature wear.
- 2Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsHard cold starting and software update for the 2009-2010 1.0In 2009 Volkswagen called in 268,140 Gol, Voyage and Fox 1.0 of the 2009 and 2010 model years to update the software of the cold-start auxiliary system: in low temperatures the engine was hard to start and the intake manifold could break, with a fire risk in some cases.
- 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalCoolingThermostat, housing and water pump of the cooling circuitVrum notes that the plastic housing of the thermostat valve on the Gol G3 and G4 dries out and cracks, causing coolant leaks. On the European 1.4 and 1.0, fiches-auto.fr records thermostats and water pumps replaced, with isolated cases of head gasket failure.
- 4Low severityFrequency: OccasionalIgnitionCoil, lead and spark plug faultsO Mecânico describes the premature failure of the Fox's EA111 coils as a chronic problem, which it links to oxidised spark plugs and the heat of ethanol. In the 60 hp Polo III 1.4, owners cite ignition faults, some in wet weather.

What the 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6 8v EA111 is
This page groups four-cylinder petrol engines with eight valves, a camshaft in the head and a timing belt from the Volkswagen Group: the 1.0 50 hp and 1.4 60 hp of European cars (Golf III, Polo III, Lupo, Arosa, Ibiza II and Córdoba I) and the EA-111 1.0 and 1.6 from Volkswagen do Brasil (Gol, Voyage, Fox). Wikipedia splits them across different sections (the 1.4 as EA111 and the European 1.0 within EA827/EA113); we group them because they share a design and the small-car market.[5][6][7][17][18][19][20]
In Brazil, the Portuguese-language Wikipedia dates the launch of the EA-111 line to 1997, with the Gol's HT 1000 Mi. The Fox has used the 8-valve EA-111 1.0 and the 8-valve 1.6 since 2003; in 2008 the 1.0 moved to VHT technology, and the Gol G5 (2008-2012) uses the 1.0 and 1.6 VHT flex. The Fox drops the EA-111 1.0 in 2016 and from 2017 only keeps the 1.6 of 101 hp.[1][7][20]
Excluded are the Škoda 1.0 and 1.4 with the camshaft in the block and chain-driven timing (codes AHT, AQV, ARV, AZE, AZF, AMD, AQW, AME and ATZ, fitted to the Lupo, Arosa, Fabia I and Octavia I), the 1.4 16-valve, the 8-valve 1.6 AEE/ALM/AVU/BSE and the 16-valve 1.6, which belong to other families. Also excluded are the Brazilian AP-1600 and AP-1800 of the Gol and the three-cylinder EA211 1.0.[5][7][21]
The timing belt is common to these engines: Wikipedia lists it for the European 1.0 and 1.4 with a camshaft, the Golf III entry gives a camshaft in the head with a belt, and O Mecânico describes a water pump and timing belt change on a Gol G5 1.0 EA111 at about 160,000 km.[5][6][8]

What changed between versions
1991–2005
1.4 8v 55-60 hp (ABD, AKP, AEX, AKV, APQ, ANX, ANW; 1991-2005)
European version of about 1,390 cc, with a camshaft in the head and, according to the Golf III entry, a timing belt. It produces 44 kW (60 hp) at 4,700-5,200 rpm; the 40 kW (54 hp) ANX was for Austria only. Wikipedia places it in the Golf III from 09/1991 (ABD, AKP, AEX, APQ), in the Polo III (AEX, AKV, APQ, 1995-1999), in the Ibiza II and Córdoba I, and in the Lupo (2000-2005) and Arosa as a 60 hp 1.4.[5][6][17][18][19]
1996–2005
1.0 8v 50 hp (AER, ALD, ALL, ANV, AUC; 1996-2005)
European version of 999 cc, 37 kW (50 hp) at 5,000 rpm, with a camshaft in the head and a timing belt, which Wikipedia places between 1996 and 2005 on the Arosa, Ibiza II, Córdoba, Lupo and Polo III. The 997 cc 1.0 that some Lupo and Arosa fitted in 1998-2000 (AHT) is a different engine, with chain drive and the camshaft in the block, and is not covered here.[5][17][18][19][21]
1997–2008
1.0 8v Mi and Total Flex (Brazilian EA-111, 1997-2008)
First EA-111 line from Volkswagen do Brasil: according to the Portuguese-language Wikipedia, the HT 1000 Mi replaced the Gol's AE-1000i in 1997 and launched the family. The Gol G3 uses it as the AT-1000 with 8 valves and 61 hp, the Gol G4 as the 1.0 8v Total Flex (68-71 hp), and the Fox has it from 2003 in its 8-valve version.[7][20]
2003–2022
1.6 8v Total Flex (Brazilian EA-111, 2003-2022)
According to the Portuguese-language Wikipedia, the Fox has an 8-valve EA-111 1.6 from its first generation (2003); in the Gol G5 it is the 1.6 VHT flex of 101-104 hp, and after 2017 it is the only engine left in the Fox (101 hp). The Gol G7 keeps it (104 hp) alongside the EA211 1.0. O Mecânico confirms the 8-valve EA111 1.6 flex in the Fox.[7][20][22]
2008–2022
1.0 8v VHT flex (EA-111, 2008-2022)
Flex evolution of the EA-111 1.0 that Volkswagen do Brasil introduced in 2008 with VHT technology to meet new emissions limits, with a change in the oil specification. In the Gol G5 (2008-2012) it produces 72-76 hp; the Portuguese-language Wikipedia cites a 'TEC' version in the G6 (2012-2022). The Fox drops the EA-111 1.0 in 2016.[1][7][20][22]
