- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesBrake servo vacuum pipe chafed by the wiper mechanism on the Volvo XC70In 2012 Volvo recalled (R/2012/104 in the United Kingdom) a batch of V60, V70, XC70 and S80 cars because the wiper mechanism could rub against the brake servo vacuum pipe. If it wears through, braking assistance falls gradually and, in the worst case, can disappear suddenly and without warning.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesVolvo XC70 parking brake module: the software could release the brake when moving the gear leverIn 2015 Volvo recalled (R/2015/040 in the United Kingdom) cars of several models, including the V70, XC70 and S80, with manual gearbox and start/stop system: the parking brake module software could release the brake when the lever was moved with the engine running. The remedy is a software update.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesABS control unit programming fault: reduced braking below 40 km/hYes: the British DVSA records recall R/2003/162 for 2,638 Carens built between 27 November 2002 and 19 March 2003. A programming fault in the ABS control unit could reduce braking force below 40 km/h; the remedy was to reprogram the control unit.
- High severityFrequency: RareBrakesCorroded brake pipesIn Dutch periodic inspections (APK), a brake pipe attacked by corrosion appears as a serious defect among the main ones for 2003 Carens, at 4%. It is data for cars rejected at inspection in the Netherlands and does not appear in other years of this generation that we have reviewed.
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesRecall over insufficient contact between the rear disc and the hubAccording to the fiches-auto.fr profile, recall KU9 deals with insufficient contact between the rear brake disc and the hub, with a risk of the wheel coming off. We have not been able to confirm it with another source.
- Medium severityFrequency: RareBrakesSoftware for hill start assist and electric parking brake (2011-2014)Gebrauchtwagenberater records a recall for a software error which, on Zafira Cs from 2011 to 2014 with hill start assist and electric parking brake, gave the impression that the handbrake was applied.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesBrake light switch failure caused by silicone greaseThe Outlander II's brake light switch can stop working and the brake lights fail to come on when you brake: Safety Gate (A12/1613/14) records it for 2007-2009, and the DVSA attributes it to silicone grease insulating the contacts. On automatics, the selector lever could fail to come out of P.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesBrake servo: the switch boot can crack and the pedal does not releaseOn certain 2010-2012 Outlander IIs the brake servo switch boot can crack and break, so that the brake pedal does not release and the car cannot move. Mitsubishi corrected it with a recall that replaces the brake servo on affected cars.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesABS-ESP control unit that does not warn of braking system faults (campaign 0EN9)The supplier programmed the ABS-ESP control unit of a batch of Australs (built from 23 March 2023 to 23 January 2025, 24,112 cars according to the KBA) incorrectly: if the braking system failed, the dashboard might not warn that ABS, ESP or emergency braking had stopped working. It is fixed by reprogramming the control unit.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesPark (P) lock and parking brake that do not engage properly due to a misaligned sensor (campaigns 0EWQ and 0EY9)On the Austral built between April 2024 and May 2025, the position sensor of the parking brake actuator may be misaligned, and the P-position lock may not engage properly when the engine is switched off, the seatbelt is unfastened or the driver's door is opened. The assisted parking brake still works. Renault replaces the actuator.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesElectric parking brake failure caused by a capacitor in the control unitYes: Subaru issued a recall for parts in the electric parking brake unit (a capacitor and a magnetic sensor ring) that could fail and cause the brake to apply or release unintentionally. In the UK, the remedy was to replace the brake actuator.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesCorrosion of the brake pipes in areas where roads are saltedYes: Subaru issued a recall in the UK for 12,379 Legacy and Outback models because the metal brake pipes leading to the four-way connector could corrode in areas where salt is spread in winter, with a risk of fluid leaking and reduced braking efficiency.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesBrake pipe defects in the inspectionAccording to the TÜV report from AUTO BILD, brake pipes on the Grand Vitara JT (2005-2015) are flagged about 2.5 times more often than average, and the discs also do worse.
- Medium severityFrequency: CommonBrakesRusted or ineffective rear brakesThe rear brakes of the Grand Vitara do little work and rust: carwiki describes them as rusted, and AutoScout24 cites a weakness in the rear brakes in the TÜV.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesIncorrectly fitted parking brake cables that can come loose or prevent the brake from releasingThe first SX4 vehicles (built from late 2005 to 2007) were recalled in 2007 because the parking brake cables could have been incorrectly fitted: according to the sources, the end of the cable could come loose and leave you with no handbrake, or the brake might not release.
- High severityFrequency: OccasionalBrakesPoor service brake and handbrake effectiveness in TÜV inspectionsIn the TÜV reports, SX4 vehicles from the most recent production years of the series fail on the operation of the service brake and the handbrake, and AutoScout24 cites a braking effectiveness that declines over time.
