How it works and why it fails

Control units and comfort electronics (BSI, SAM...)

Comfort functions (lights, doors, wipers, alarm...) are managed by control units such as the BSI on Peugeot and Citroën or the SAM module on Mercedes, connected in a network (multiplexing). If one fails or gets damp, warnings appear in a cascade with no apparent connection between them.

What to do

When several electrical faults appear at once, ask for a full network diagnosis before replacing individual parts. Check whether water is getting into the cabin or the control unit area: it is the cause of many of these faults.

General explanation by MotorFiable. The specific faults of each engine and car, with their sources, are on the linked pages.
