Abnormal play in the steering or noises from the front axle: causes and the faults that trigger it

A steering wheel with dead travel, vague steering or creaks and clicks from the front when manoeuvring point, according to RACE, to slack in the ball joints, track rod ends and steering rods, and sometimes in the column or suspension parts. RACE warns that a slack of just a few millimetres already changes how the car behaves and that driving with a broken ball joint or a lot of play is not advisable, so it should be checked at a garage as soon as possible.^[1][2][3]

As soon as possible

If you clearly notice the steering losing precision, do not keep driving and ask for the steering and its mountings to the front axle to be checked as soon as possible.

What it means

The steering wheel has more dead travel than normal before the wheels respond, the steering feels loose, or you hear clicks and creaks around the front axle when manoeuvring. It can come from ball joints, steering rack ends or the very bolts that fix the steering gear to the axle.

1. Worn steering or suspension ball joints
Common cause
RACE lists among the symptoms of a worn ball joint slack in the steering, dull knocks or a "clunk" over bumps, metallic noise at the front, vague steering, pulling to one side and uneven tyre wear. The causes are mileage, potholes and kerbs, and a split dust boot.^[2]

2. Steering rods and track rod ends with play
Common cause
RACE describes how knocks against the kerb when parking can create slack in the rod and ball joint over the months, with less precise steering even if the play is only a few millimetres. The rods have an inner joint and an outer track rod end with a ball joint, which must move without play.^[1][3]

3. Silentblocks and suspension mounts
Possible cause
RACE explains that worn silentblocks (suspension bushes), like ball joints, create slack that changes the wheel angles. Autofácil insists that with ball joints that have a lot of play, a wheel alignment is pointless.^[4][5]

4. Steering column with slack or broken universal joint
Uncommon
RACE says the column needs no maintenance and is unlikely to fail unless it takes a hard knock, but that over the years the transmission can develop some play and the central universal joint can end up breaking.^[6]

RACE warns that symptoms alone do not identify the faulty part: tyre pressure, a damaged wheel or poor alignment can give similar sensations, and an inspection and a fault code reading are needed.^[1]

The steering wheel moves before the wheels respond

RACE includes among the symptoms of slack excessive travel in the steering wheel before the car responds, and reminds readers that the driver may not notice it when the play is small; at the ITV (the Spanish roadworthiness inspection, similar to the MOT) it is detected with platforms that move the car in several directions.^[1][3]

Clicks or creaks when turning the steering wheel

RACE links knocks, creaks or clicks when turning to ball joints, steering rods, the column or suspension parts, and asks for an inspection because the noise alone does not pinpoint the part.^[1]

Dull knocks from the front over bumps

RACE lists dull knocks or a "clunk" over bumps and metallic noise from the front among the symptoms of a worn ball joint.^[2]

Vague or loose steering in a straight line and in corners

RACE includes vague steering, instability in corners or under braking and vibrations among the symptoms of a worn ball joint, and links it to slack in the steering rod.^[1][2][3]

In addition, the car pulls to one side or the steering wheel sits crooked

RACE lists pulling and an off-centre steering wheel in a straight line among the symptoms of slack or wear, along with uneven tyre wear; they can also be caused by incorrect alignment.^[1][2]

What to check first

Note when the symptom appears (stationary, when turning, over bumps, when braking) and whether, besides having play, the steering wheel sits crooked or the car pulls.^[1]
Check the tyre pressure and look for damage to the wheel or tyre, because RACE warns that they give similar sensations.^[1]
Ask a garage to check the slack with the car raised and inspect the ball joints, dust boots, steering rods, silentblocks and column. RACE adds that a fault code reading is also needed.^[1][2]
If they replace a ball joint or track rod end, ask for an alignment afterwards; RACE puts the alignment at an extra €40-90 in Spain.^[2]
Look to see whether the ball joint dust boot is split or grease is visible, another symptom cited by RACE.^[2]

Can I keep driving?

Urgency: As soon as possible

RACE says that driving with a broken ball joint or a lot of slack is not advisable, that when you notice the symptoms you should avoid driving fast and making long journeys and go to a garage, and that a small amount of slack can change the behaviour of the whole car even if the steering wheel seems to work. If the steering clearly loses precision, the sensible thing is to stop driving and get it checked as soon as possible. The sources do not set a number of kilometres you can keep driving with the symptom.^[1][2]

How much play is normal in a steering wheel?

None of the sources consulted gives a figure. RACE warns that a slack of a few millimetres already changes how the car behaves and that the driver may not notice it, so it is better detected at a garage or at the ITV (the Spanish roadworthiness inspection).^[1][3]

Can you drive with play in the steering?

RACE advises against driving with a broken ball joint or a lot of slack and asks you to avoid speed and long journeys when you notice the symptoms, as well as going to a garage. No source states how many kilometres are safe.^[2]

What is checked on the steering at the ITV?

RACE explains that ITV stations (the Spanish roadworthiness inspection, similar to the MOT) check for slack and leaks by placing the car on platforms that move in several directions, and that such a small amount of play may not be noticeable to the driver.^[3]

How much does it cost to fix play in the steering?

According to RACE, a separate steering ball joint costs between €100 and €250 in Spain including part and labour, a suspension one between €120 and €300, and a ball joint integrated in the arm can exceed €250-500. The alignment afterwards adds between €40 and €90.^[2]

Is a noise when turning the steering wheel always from the steering?

No. RACE clarifies that knocks, creaks or clicks when turning can come from ball joints, rods, the column or suspension parts, and that pressure, a damaged wheel or incorrect alignment give similar sensations.^[1]
