Squealing or metallic grinding when braking: causes and the faults that trigger it
Brake noise usually comes from the pads (new and not yet bedded in, worn, dirty or glazed), from scored or lipped discs, from damp or rust after rain or a long stop, or from unlubricated caliper slides. It is often temporary, but a constant high-pitched squeal or a metallic grinding indicates worn pads and the brakes should be checked soon.[1][2][3][4]
34 documented faults cause it in 33 cars. The most important:
- High severity: Seized rear brakes and brake pipe corrosion · Opel Zafira A
- High severity: Rusted brake pipes and poorly performing brakes · Suzuki Jimny III
- Critical severity: Defective front brake discs that may crack (Proace City Verso) · Toyota ProAce City
What it means
A high-pitched squeal can be the audible wear indicator on the pads; a low metallic grinding means the pad has no material left and the backing plate is rubbing on the disc. Seized calipers can also squeal, as can damp conditions.
General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.
What to do now
Garage soon
If the noise is metallic and constant when braking, have the brakes checked as soon as possible: the disc gets damaged quickly and braking gets worse.
Most common causes
From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.
1. Worn brake pads
Common causeAutopista names it as the most common cause: when the friction material runs out, the exposed metal rubs against the disc. RACE explains that some manufacturers fit an acoustic wear indicator that warns the pad is about to wear out and that, without one, a very high-pitched, loud squeal means there is no friction material left and the backing plate is rubbing directly on the disc. Autodoc describes that low, grinding noise as a sign of completely worn pads.[1][2][3][4]
2. Scored, lipped or stepped discs
Common causeRACE says that a worn disc leaves a lip that rubs against the pad and produces a softer noise, typical when braking at low speed at traffic lights; Autodoc talks about a step next to the edge that also causes squealing. RACE adds that scored discs lengthen the braking distance and that a warped disc makes the pedal pulse.[1][2][5]
3. Damp, rust or dirt on pads and discs
Common causeRACE states that, if the car stands for a long time, the discs rust and squeal on the first few stops until the rust disappears. Autopista adds that in very humid conditions or after heavy rain temporary squealing is common, and that dust, sand or small stones between pads and discs also cause noise; Diariomotor notes that damp is removed once the system reaches its operating temperature.[1][3][6][7]
4. New pads not bedded in, of a different type or badly fitted
Possible causeRACE explains that new pads have a small protective layer and that it is normal for them to squeal for the first few kilometres, and Autodoc speaks of a bedding-in period. Autopista includes faulty installation or low-quality components among the causes, and RACE points out that sintered pads can be noisier than organic ones. HELLA stresses bedding in the braking system after the repair.[1][2][3][8][9]
5. Pads glazed by overheating
Possible causeAutopista describes how, after prolonged braking, a glass-like layer can form on the pad, and that in this case they must be replaced as soon as possible. Diariomotor links glazing to repeated braking or braking on steep descents, when the friction material exceeds its working temperature.[6][7]
6. Calipers or slides unlubricated or seized
Possible causeAccording to Autodoc, retaining clips and slide pins without enough lubrication make noise. RACE warns that a caliper that stays partly applied causes overheating and makes the car brake less on one side, and blames a damaged dust boot, poor maintenance or expired brake fluid.[2][10]
7. Lever handbrake not fully released
UncommonRACE notes that, if the car has a lever handbrake and you forget to release it completely, a rubbing noise can also be heard.[1]
8. Drum brakes with built-up friction material
UncommonDiariomotor points out that, in squealing drum brakes, the main cause is friction material that has built up because it was not removed.[7]
Depending on what you notice
Constant high-pitched squeal when braking
If the car has no sensor or wear indicator and you hear a very high-pitched, loud squeal, RACE says the pads are worn and the backing plate is rubbing on the disc, and that the repair can come to around 150 euros in the best case. Autopista identifies pad wear as the most common cause of squealing.[3][4]
Noise when braking at low speed (traffic lights, parking)
RACE describes the lip on a worn disc as a softer noise that is usually heard when braking at low speed at traffic lights. Autodoc says that noise when braking at low speed can be due to worn pads.[1][2]
Metallic scraping or grinding noise when braking
Autodoc states that a metallic, grinding-type noise means the pads are completely worn, and RACE compares the sound of the pad backing plate against the disc to an angle grinder cutting stone. At that point metal is rubbing directly on the disc.[2][5]
Brakes squeal after rain or after standing
This is a common, temporary cause: RACE says the rust on the discs wears off and the noise disappears, Autopista notes temporary squealing from damp after heavy rain and Diariomotor points out that damp is removed once the system reaches its operating temperature.[1][3][7]
New pads squeal
RACE considers it normal for new pads to squeal during the first few kilometres and Autodoc attributes it to the bedding-in period, although it can also be due to incorrect fitting that should be checked. HELLA says that, after changing the brakes, they must be bedded in so that discs and pads adapt to each other.[1][2][8]
Noise together with a soft pedal, vibration or longer braking distance
RACE associates worn pads with a softer pedal with more travel and with a longer braking distance, and a warped disc with a pulsing pedal. If the car also brakes less on one side, RACE links it to a caliper that stays applied.[4][5][10]
What to check first
- Note when it makes the noise (first stops after rain or a long stop, at low speed, always or only under hard braking) and what it sounds like: high-pitched squeal, low grinding noise or vibration in the pedal.[1][2][5]
- If it has rained or the car has been standing, check whether the noise disappears after a few stops. Autopista suggests braking gently but firmly several times to clear the deposits, and RACE and Diariomotor point out that rust and damp go away on their own.[1][6][7]
- If the car has a lever handbrake, make sure it is fully released.[1]
- Ask for the pad thickness and the condition of the discs (scoring, lip or step at the edge) to be checked. Autopista recommends replacing them when wear is significant.[2][3][5]
- Go to a garage without delay if the pedal is softer or has more travel, vibrates, the car brakes worse or brakes less on one side, or if one wheel gets abnormally hot.[4][5][10]
- If you changed the brakes recently and the squeal persists after the first few kilometres, ask for the fitting and the lubrication of clips and slides to be checked. HELLA says discs are always replaced in pairs and with new pads as well.[2][3][8]
Can I keep driving?
Urgency: Garage soon
It depends on the noise. Autopista states that, in most cases, squealing is not a particular cause for concern, except for glazed pads, which must be replaced as soon as possible; if it persists, a specialist should inspect the system. A very high-pitched, loud squeal or a metallic scraping indicates, according to RACE and Autodoc, pads with no material left and the backing plate rubbing on the disc, and RACE recommends having the car checked if it brakes worse or makes a strange noise. None of the sources says how many kilometres you can cover with that noise.[2][4][5][6]

Frequently asked questions
Why do brakes squeal at low speed?
RACE links it to the lip that forms on a worn disc, with a softer noise heard mainly at traffic lights. Autodoc says that noise when braking at low speed can be due to worn pads. Autopista adds dirt between pads and discs and damp as other causes.[1][2][3]
Is it normal for new pads to squeal?
Yes, during the first few kilometres. RACE explains that new pads have a small protective layer and Autodoc attributes it to the bedding-in period. If the noise continues afterwards, Autodoc recommends checking that the fitting is correct.[1][2]
Can brakes squeal just because of damp?
Yes. Autopista notes that temporary squealing is common in very humid conditions or after heavy rain, and RACE that the discs rust if the car stands for a long time and the rust disappears after the first stops.[1][3]
How much does it cost to change brake pads?
RACE puts a set of pads at around 50 euros, not counting garage labour, and warns that, if the backing plate is already rubbing on the disc, the repair can come to around 150 euros in the best case. It does not give a price including discs.[1][4]
How many kilometres between pad changes?
RACE gives a range of between 30,000 and 60,000 kilometres, depending on the type of pad, the load on the car and driving style, with more wear in aggressive driving and in town.[1][4]
Can I keep driving if the car makes a noise when braking?
With a slight, temporary noise after rain or with new pads, Autopista sees no particular cause for concern. If the squeal is high-pitched and constant, there is metallic scraping, a soft pedal or a longer braking distance, RACE recommends having the car checked, and Autopista asks for a specialist to inspect it if the noise persists.[4][5][6]
