2.2 JTDm Multijet II engine: faults and reliability

Alfa Romeo 2.2 JTDm Multijet II (Giulia and Stelvio) · Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo's 2.2 diesel (Giulia and Stelvio) has a good reputation: a German guide rates it as very reliable and a 210 hp Stelvio covered 100,000 km in a test without any faults. The sources mainly record leaks and oil consumption, the odd particulate filter and EGR case, and two one-off campaigns: the fuel filter gasket (2018 Giulia) and the alternator cable next to the EGR pipe (2017-2018 Stelvio).[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Which 2.2 JTDm Multijet II versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.2 JTDm Euro 6 (136-210 hp, 2016-2019)

    2016–2019 · 136–210 hp · 55275156

    With caution

The engine has a good reputation, but these years accumulate two campaigns: the fuel filter gasket (2018 diesel Giulia, Italy) and the alternator cable next to the exhaust gas recirculation pipe (2017-2018 diesel Stelvio), as well as leaks and oil consumption in the testimonials. Buy with the campaigns done and the oil history in hand.[1][3][4][5][6]

  • With caution

It is the same engine with AdBlue added and we have found no faults specific to this version: a 210 hp Stelvio completed 100,000 km without faults, although with a fluid loss around the crankshaft, deposits on the intake valves and high AdBlue consumption. Can be bought if you check the codes of the AdBlue system and particulate filter and the oil level.[2]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 2.2 JTDm Multijet II

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: OccasionalFuelDiesel leak from the fuel filter gasketAlfa Romeo recalled 3,873 2018 Giulia with the 2.2 diesel over a faulty fuel filter gasket that caused diesel leaks (according to Alvolante). The source gives no date or reference for the campaign and cites no real failures.
  2. 2High severityFrequency: OccasionalElectronicsAlternator cable touching the exhaust gas recirculation pipe (fire risk)An Alfa Romeo campaign covers diesel Stelvio built between 18 January 2017 and 18 September 2018: an alternator cable may rub against the exhaust gas recirculation pipe and cause a short circuit, with a fire risk in the worst case.
  3. 3Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalLubricationEngine oil leaksLeaks and oil consumption are the most cited items in testimonials for the 2.2 diesel: 12 of 84 in the Stelvio and 9 of 68 in the Giulia. A 100,000 km test detected a fluid loss around the crankshaft; Alfa Romeo replied that the measured wear was low.
  4. 4Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlClogged particulate filter (DPF) and EGR valve with depositsThe particulate filter and EGR valve of the 2.2 diesel are listed among its weak points in a German guide; the testimonials record excessive regenerations and replaced particulate sensors. Alfa Romeo attributes the intake valve deposits to the operation of the EGR.

What the 2.2 JTDm Multijet II is

The 2.2 JTDm (Multijet II) is a 2,143 cc four-cylinder turbodiesel with common rail injection at 2,000 bar, an electrically actuated variable-geometry turbo and an all-aluminium block. It belongs to the modular Pratola Serra family, where Alfa Romeo's diesels are built, and debuted in the Giulia in 2016 before reaching the Stelvio in 2017.[7][8][9]

It was sold with outputs from 136 to 210 hp and torque from 380 to 470 N·m, with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox; the 210 hp came with the automatic and Q4 all-wheel drive. In the 2019 update the 150 hp became 160 hp and the 180 hp became 190 hp.[5][7][8][9]

That same 2019 update brought the engine to the Euro 6d standard and added AdBlue, so later versions add the nitrogen oxide reduction system to the particulate filter and EGR of the earlier ones.[7][8][9]

The timing drive is a toothed belt, not a chain: the replacement kits for the Stelvio 2.2 diesel include the belt, tensioner and two pulleys, with or without a water pump. A German workshop website cites a change every 4 to 6 years according to Alfa Romeo, with no mileage interval.[10][11]

Used-car guides describe it as a reliable engine, while reminding you of the typical diesel weak points (particulate filter, dual-mass flywheel, turbo, EGR and injectors); in the testimonial pages the most cited items are leaks and oil consumption.[1][3][4]

What changed between versions

  1. 2016–2019

    2.2 JTDm Euro 6 (136-210 hp, 2016-2019)

First series of the engine in the Giulia (2016) and Stelvio (2017): 2,143 cc with 136, 150, 180 and 210 hp, with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox; the 210 hp only with the automatic and Q4 all-wheel drive. A tuning database gives the code 55275156 for the 2017 150 hp; we have not been able to confirm it with the manufacturer.[5][7][8][12]

  2. since 2019

2.2 JTDm Euro 6d with AdBlue (136-210 hp, 2019 onwards)

2019 (model year) update: Euro 6d standard and AdBlue; the 150 hp becomes 160 hp and the 180 hp becomes 190 hp, and the 136 hp is offered with the eight-speed automatic. A German guide states that from November 2020 only the 210 hp version was available.[1][7][8][9]
