How it works and why it fails

Handbrake and parking brake

The handbrake can be mechanical, with a lever and a cable that pull on the rear calipers or shoes, or electric, with a button and motors on the calipers. On the former, the cable, the adjustment and the lever ratchet are what mainly fail; on the latter, the motors, the wiring and the software, and a caliper that does not fully release is a known fault on some models.

What to do

If the lever travels very high, the car is not held securely on a slope, the parking brake warning appears or the brake will not release, take it to a workshop. On electric systems, to change the rear pads the calipers have to be put into service mode with the diagnostic machine or from the car's menu.

  4. 4Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalMitsubishi ASX ICorrosion of the parking brake shaft and failure of the rear caliper automatic adjustmentMitsubishi recalled the ASX because the anti-rust coating on the parking brake shaft can flake off, let water in and rust the shaft and the rear caliper, and because the automatic pad adjustment might not work. In the worst case, the handbrake does not hold the parked car.
  5. 5Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalMitsubishi Outlander IIICorrosion of the parking brake shaft and failure of the rear calipers' automatic adjustmentMitsubishi recalled the Outlander and Outlander PHEV because the anti-rust coating on the parking brake shaft can come off, let water in and rust the shaft and the rear caliper, and because the automatic pad adjustment might not work. In the worst case, the handbrake does not hold the parked car.
