Power steering

Power steering reduces the effort needed to turn the wheel. Hydraulic systems use a pump and fluid; electric ones (EPS), increasingly common, use an electric motor and a control unit, with typical faults in the software, the sensors or the motor itself that leave the steering heavy.

What to do

If the steering suddenly becomes heavy, the steering warning light comes on or it makes noises when turning, take extreme care and get a diagnosis. On electric systems, check for a software update or a campaign; on hydraulic ones, the fluid level and leaks.
