Electric parking brake warning: causes and the faults that trigger it

If the electric parking brake shows a warning, the usual cause according to the sources is a fault in the switch, a dirty or faulty motor, the control unit, a fuse or the electrical supply. It can get stuck on without releasing or fail to hold the car. RACE reminds readers that each manufacturer provides an emergency release method, but you should still go to a garage.[1][2][3]

59 documented faults cause it in 59 cars. The most important:

    What it means

Cars with an electric parking brake show a warning light or message when the caliper motor, its wiring or the control unit fails. The brake may not release or may not apply.

General explanation from MotorFiable. How it shows up in each engine, with sources, is in the list of faults.

    What to do now

    Garage soon

Do not rely on the handbrake if the warning appears: park on level ground and leave the car in gear. Have the system diagnosed.

    71 sourcesHow we work

    Most common causes

From most to least likely according to the sources. Under each cause, the part and the related OBD codes.

    1. 1. Handbrake not fully released

      Common cause

coches.com points out that the simplest and most frequent cause is that the brake isn't fully released; RACE reminds readers that, if the warning light stays on after releasing it, there may be a serious problem in the braking circuit.[3][4]

      Faults with with the handbrake

    2. 2. Blown fuse or lack of battery voltage

      Common cause

RACE cites a blown fuse or loss of electrical supply among the causes of electric brake failure; coches.com adds low battery voltage.[1][3]

      Faults with with the handbrake

    3. 3. Dirty or faulty brake motor

      Common cause

RACE explains that dirt builds up in the motor that pulls the cables, under the car or in the wheel arch, and can jam it; in the two-motor system, brake pad dust can get into one of them. It attributes this mainly to lack of maintenance.[1]

      Faults with with the handbrake

    4. 4. Control unit

      Possible cause

RACE includes control unit failure among the causes in two-motor systems.[1]

Faults with with the handbrakeFaults with with the electrical wiring

    5. 5. Worn switch or button

      Possible cause

RACE points out that the electric button can wear out through repeated use of its contacts.[1]

      Faults with with the handbrake

    6. 6. Brake pads, calipers or brake fluid in poor condition

      Possible cause

coches.com lists worn pads or calipers, low, bubbly or contaminated fluid, the level sensor and the pedal switch as causes of the warning light staying on; with the ABS light also on, the calipers may be partially seized.[3][4]

Faults with with brake calipers and discsFaults with with the brake system

    Depending on what you notice

    The electric handbrake won't release

RACE describes how it can get stuck on. On a slope it suggests pushing the car, preferably with several people, to relieve pressure on the rear brakes, and reminds readers that each manufacturer has an emergency method using a tool that is usually in the car; normally a technician should do it.[1][2]

The electric handbrake doesn't hold the car

RACE says the system may not hold the vehicle. Diariomotor points out that, at the ITV (the Spanish roadworthiness inspection, similar to the MOT), the parking brake must hold the car on a 16% slope; its criteria refer to mechanical brakes.[1][5]

Red warning light with a P or a circle with an exclamation mark

coches.com describes the red warning light with a P in brackets and, sometimes, an exclamation mark. If it comes on while driving, it suggests stopping safely, switching off the engine, waiting a few seconds and starting again: if it goes out, it may be a false alarm; if not, go to a garage.[3]

The warning light stays on even though I released it

RACE warns that it can indicate a serious problem in the braking circuit. coches.com asks you to check the fluid level, look for drips under the car and check the brake lights.[3][4]

Brake warning together with the ABS warning light

coches.com says that, if the ABS warning light is also on, the calipers may be partially seized and you should not drive, but call your insurer for a tow truck.[3]

    What to check first

    1. Check that the brake is fully released and that the button responds.[1][3]
    2. If the warning light comes on while driving, stop somewhere safe, switch off the engine, wait a few seconds and start again: coches.com suggests this as the first test.[3]
    3. Check the brake fluid level, look for drips under the car and check the brake lights.[3]
    4. Ask the garage to clean the brake motors (in the two-motor system this is usually done when changing pads) and to check the fuse and power supply.[1]
    5. If the brake is stuck on, use the manufacturer's emergency method, which usually requires a specific tool.[1][2]

    Can I keep driving?

    Urgency: Garage soon

RACE and coches.com recommend going to a garage if the warning light doesn't go out, and coches.com asks you not to drive if the ABS light is also on. RACE warns that driving with the brake on wears pads and discs, overheats them and lengthens braking distances. No source details how far you can drive with an electric brake warning.[1][2][3]

How much it costs to fix

Indicative prices published by the sources cited; they depend on the car and the garage.

Replacing the motor that pulls the cables, according to RACE (from affordable cars to luxury cars; not the motor built into the caliper)[1]€500 – €1,000

    Parking brake warning by brand

    Frequently asked questions

What do I do if the electric handbrake stays on?

RACE suggests, on a slope, pushing the car to relieve pressure on the rear brakes and, if it doesn't release, using the manufacturer's emergency release, which requires a tool and technical knowledge.[1][2]

Can you drive with the handbrake on or the warning light on?

RACE advises against driving with the brake on: it wears pads and discs, overheats them and lengthens braking distance. With the warning light on, coches.com asks you to stop and see a mechanic.[2][3]

How much does it cost to fix an electric handbrake?

RACE puts the motor that pulls the cables at about €500 in Spain on affordable cars and above €1,000 on luxury cars. If the fault is a fuse, the cost is much lower, although no source gives a figure.[1]

Will a car with a faulty parking brake pass the MOT?

Diariomotor explains that the brake must hold the car on a 16% slope and that it is only a serious defect if it doesn't act on one side or its efficiency is below that value. The article refers to mechanical brakes.[5]

Why does the electric handbrake fail?

RACE attributes it to the button, dirt in the motor, the control unit, a fuse or lack of power, and links most causes to lack of maintenance.[1]
