2.2/2.5 dCi engine: faults and reliability

Nissan 2.2 dCi / 2.5 dCi (YD22DDT, YD22DDTi, YD25DDTi) · Nissan

The 2.2 dCi (YD22DDT/YD22DDTi) and 2.5 dCi (YD25DDTi) are diesels of Nissan's own design, with a timing chain, fitted to the Almera, Primera, X-Trail, Navara and Pathfinder between 2000 and 2015. The turbo and its intercooler are the best-documented fault, above all on the X-Trail, along with injector failures; the timing chain, on the other hand, gives hardly any trouble according to the reliability reports consulted.[1][2][3]

Which 2.2/2.5 dCi versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.2 Di 110-125 (YD22DDT, 2000-2003)

    2000–2003 · 110–125 hp · YD22DDT

    With caution

The reliability reports consulted record few turbo cases on this version, but do record cases of the injection pump electronics; as it is the oldest tune, it is worth checking the maintenance history before buying.[2]

  • 2.2 dCi 136-140 (YD22DDTi, 2003-2007)

    2003–2007 · 136–140 hp · YD22DDTi

    With caution

This is the tune with the most documented turbo, intercooler and injector cases, especially on the X-Trail; it is worth checking both before buying.[3]

  • 2.5 dCi 142-174 (YD25DDTi, 2005-2010)

    2005–2010 · 142–174 hp · YD25DDTi

    With caution

We have not found a reliability report with accounts of our own for the Navara or the Pathfinder. As it shares a technical family with the 2.2 dCi, it is reasonable to expect similar weak points (turbo, injectors), but without data of our own to confirm it for these two models.[1]

  • 2.5 dCi 144-190 (YD25DDTi, 2010-2015)

    2010–2015 · 144–190 hp · YD25DDTi

    With caution

It predictably shares the same weak points as the previous tune; we have not found a reliability report of our own for the Navara or the Pathfinder that would let us confirm whether the 2010 turbo change improved durability.[1]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

Known faults of the 2.2/2.5 dCi

Sorted from most to least important (severity × frequency).

  1. 1High severityFrequency: CommonTurboPremature turbo and intercooler failureOn the X-Trail with the 136 hp 2.2 dCi, the turbo and its intercooler are the most cited fault: they appear in nearly half of the reliability accounts consulted. On the Primera and Almera, with the same engine, the documented cases are far fewer.
  2. 2High severityFrequency: CommonInjectionInjection pump or injector failureThe 2.2 dCi's common rail injectors fail fairly often on the X-Trail and Almera, with cases of seizing and leaks; on the Almera with the older YD22DDT, the documented fault is in the injection pump electronics, not the injectors.
  3. 3Critical severityFrequency: RareTimingTiming chain wearThe 2.2 dCi's timing chain is one of the engine's strong points: the reliability reports consulted record very few cases of wear, far below the other faults we document for this engine.
  4. 4Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlClogged EGR valveThe 2.2 dCi's EGR valve gets dirty with carbon from the gas recirculation and can stick: it is the fault with the most accounts in the Almera report, with additional cases, though in lower proportion, on the X-Trail.
  5. 5Low severityFrequency: RareIntakeDirty or misreading mass airflow sensorThe 2.2 dCi's mass airflow sensor can get dirty and give incorrect readings; the Almera reliability report points to it as a known problem of the engine, although with few recorded cases.

What the 2.2/2.5 dCi is

The YD is a family of in-line four-cylinder diesel engines, with a cast-iron block and aluminium head and a timing chain, developed by Nissan with no relation to the Renault-origin dCi engines (K9K, F9Q, M9R) that also use that trade name in Europe. Nissan introduced it in 2000 with the 2.2 Di (YD22DDT), a turbodiesel with electronic rotary-pump injection and a fixed-geometry turbo, fitted to the Almera (N16) and the first X-Trail (T30).[1][5][6]

In 2003 came the 2.2 dCi (YD22DDTi), with common rail injection, a variable-geometry turbo and an intercooler, with up to 136 hp; it spread to the Primera (P12) and the Almera Tino, while continuing to be fitted to the Almera and the X-Trail. Although "dCi" is a trademark registered by Renault, the Renault-Nissan Alliance also used it for this Nissan-designed engine in the European market.[1][7]

In 2005 Nissan increased the displacement to 2.5 litres (YD25DDTi) for the Navara (D40) pickup and the Pathfinder (R51) SUV, with 174 hp and 403 Nm of torque in its highest state of tune. A 2010 update, with a different turbo and a lower compression ratio to meet the Euro 5 standard, raised this to 190 hp and 450 Nm. The Pathfinder R51 was sold in Europe until 2014 and the Navara D40 until around 2015, when it was replaced by the NP300 (D23).[4][8][9][10][11]

What changed between versions

  1. 2000–2003

    2.2 Di 110-125 (YD22DDT, 2000-2003)

First turbodiesel tune of the YD22 family: injection by a Bosch VP44 electronic rotary pump and a fixed-geometry turbocharger. It debuted in the Almera (N16) and the first X-Trail (T30) in 2000-2001 with 110 hp, and reached the Primera (P12) in 2001 with a somewhat higher tune (125 hp).[1][5][6][7]

  2. 2003–2007

    2.2 dCi 136-140 (YD22DDTi, 2003-2007)

Replaced the rotary pump with common rail injection and added a variable-geometry turbocharger with intercooler, with 136-140 hp depending on the model. It was fitted to the Almera, Primera and X-Trail, and also to the Almera Tino.[1][5][6][7]

  3. 2005–2010

    2.5 dCi 142-174 (YD25DDTi, 2005-2010)

A 2.5-litre version derived from the same family, designed for heavier vehicles: common rail injection, a variable-geometry turbocharger and an intercooler, with up to 403 Nm of torque in its highest state of tune. It was fitted to the Navara (D40) from 2005 and to the Pathfinder (R51) from its arrival in Europe.[1][8][9][11]

  4. 2010–2015

    2.5 dCi 144-190 (YD25DDTi, 2010-2015)

A 2010 update with a different turbocharger and a lower compression ratio to meet the Euro 5 standard, with up to 190 hp and 450 Nm; on some Navara versions a lower tune of around 144 hp was also retained.[4][8][10]
