Which 1.8 TCe versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the 1.8 TCe is

The 1.8 TCe (code M5P, “M5Pt” in the Mégane) is a 1,798 cm³ turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection, derived from Renault-Nissan engines and reworked by Alpine's engineers. It debuted in the Alpine A110 in 2017 and reached the fourth-generation Mégane R.S. in 2018, where it replaced the F4Rt 2.0 turbo of the Mégane II and III R.S.[4][5]

In the A110, with a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, it produces 252 hp (320 N·m). The 2019 A110 S raises this to 292 hp, the A110 R to 300 hp, and the 2024 R Ultime to 350 hp and 420 N·m. In the Mégane R.S. it produces 280 hp (300 hp in the Trophy), with a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox.[4][5][6]

The A110 is built in Dieppe and, according to Wikipedia, production ended in mid-2026. The Mégane R.S., the last Renault Sport model, was discontinued in 2023.[4][5][6]
