Toyota 2.5 and 3.0 D-4D (serie KD: 2KD-FTV and 1KD-FTV)Injectors
Denso injector failure in the 3.0 D-4D (blockage and wear) on the 2.5 / 3.0 D-4D (KD)
Why this rating?
High severity: Risk of a serious engine, turbo or gearbox failure.
Frequency occasional: AutoBild (2020) reports that only 4% of readers of its Allrad magazine suffered injector damage on the 3.0 of the Land Cruiser 150, with failures from around 70,000 km and also engines at 300,000 km without problems; Autofácil (2011), by contrast, speaks of quite a few 3.0 D-4D units with blocked injectors, mainly the first ones. Without figures from Spanish workshops, we rate it as occasional.[1][2]
Symptoms
- Heavy knocking and rattling when cold.[3][6]Engine knock: other faults that cause it · As soon as possible
- Loss of power under full load and unstable idle; BilKoll also cites codes P0201 to P0204 on the Land Cruiser 120.[4][7]Less power: other faults that cause it · Monitor
- Higher fuel consumption.[3][6]Uses more fuel: other faults that cause it · Monitor
- Smoke on acceleration, black or white according to BilKoll.[4][7]Black smoke: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Slow cold starting, and difficult starting in severe cases.[4][7]Hard to start: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
- Engine fault warning light on.[4]Engine warning light: other faults that cause it · Garage soon
Why it happens
Autofácil explains that in quite a few units of the 3.0 D-4D the injectors built up deposits (sodium carboxylate) and clogged, something Toyota attributed to the acidity of Spanish fuel and which it corrected, in principle, by fitting new injectors; by 2009 it was already reporting dirt and blockage in the first units.[2][5]
AutoBild describes the Denso injectors as complicated and sensitive, and MotorReviewer adds that the 3.0's common rail is sensitive to fuel quality and that the injectors can fail at around 120,000 km even with good fuel.[1][3]
If it is not repaired: AutoBild warns that a damaged injector must be detected early, because continuing to drive can destroy the whole engine, and Unsealed 4x4 attributes broken pistons to faulty injectors.[1][6]
Affected cars and years
Autofácil places the problem mainly in the first units of the 3.0 D-4D of the Land Cruiser 120-125 (its price table dates from 2003 to 2005), and AutoBild documents it on the J150 from 2010 to 2015. BilKoll also cites injector wear on the 2.5 and 3.0 of the Hilux from 2005 to 2015, but it is the only source for the 2.5, so we do not include it.[1][2][4][5]

How much it costs to repair
Includes: Diagnosis and replacement of one or more Denso common rail injectors; no prices are published in Spain.[1]
We have found no Spanish prices. AutoBild puts one injector of the Land Cruiser 3.0 at €1,500-1,800 in Germany, as a reference only.
Prices in Spain, including VAT. A workshop hour costs on average €38–66 at independent garages and €77–134 at dealerships in Spain, depending on the region and the brand. How we calculate costs
How to check for it before buying a used car
- Do not rely on mileage: AutoBild documents damage from around 70,000 km and engines at 300,000 km without problems. Ask for invoices for the injectors or their replacement.[1]
- Check that the cold idle is stable, without knocking or abnormal smoke, and read the fault memory for injector codes.[3][6][7]

Denso common rail injector for the 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV)[1]
The faulty injector is replaced; AutoBild states that Denso manufactures them.

Other 2.5 / 3.0 D-4D (KD) faults
- Critical severityFrequency: CommonCylinder head and blockCracked pistons in the 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV)Some 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV) engines with the pistons of the Euro 4 era suffer cracks in one or more pistons, usually between 100,000 and 150,000 km, with loss of power, knocking and smoke. Toyota issued technical bulletins, but according to CarsGuide there was no recall in Australia.Appears at around 100,000 km
- Critical severityFrequency: OccasionalInjectionLeaking copper injector seats and blocked oil pickupThe copper seats under the injectors can stop sealing and let combustion gases into the oil; soot blocks the crankcase oil pickup and, in the worst case, the engine runs out of lubrication. RAC rates it as a potentially very serious problem on the Hilux 2.5 D-4D.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalTurboVariable-geometry turbo actuator failure in the 3.0 D-4DThe variable-geometry turbo of the Hilux 3.0 D-4D can stop regulating boost pressure because the electric actuator fails or because soot blocks the geometry, and the car goes into limp mode. Unsealed 4x4 says the actuator is now sold separately, without replacing the whole turbo.
- Medium severityFrequency: OccasionalEmissions controlEGR valve and intake manifold blocked by soot in the 3.0 D-4DIn the Hilux 3.0 D-4D soot can block the EGR valve and the intake manifold passages, with loss of power, rough idle and higher consumption. Unsealed 4x4 notes that this happens to common rail diesels with EGR in general and that the usual fix is to remove and clean.
More faults with the injectors on other engines and cars
- High severityFrequency: Very frequentOM651Delphi piezo injector failure (220/250 CDI)Yes: 220 and 250 CDI models built between 2008 and 2011 had Delphi piezo injectors that were prone to failing and seizing in the cylinder head. Mercedes-Benz replaced them under warranty in 2009 and switched the 220 CDI to solenoid injectors from 2010-2011, but the 250 CDI kept them.Repair (garage): €3,600–€5,900
- High severityFrequency: CommonBMW N52 / N53N53 piezoelectric injector failureThe N53's piezoelectric direct injectors fail frequently and cause misfires, rough idle and limp mode; replacing them is expensive and they must be coded.
- High severityFrequency: CommonMZR-CDOil dilution from leaking injector seals and DPF regenerationsOn the 2.0 and 2.2 MZR-CD, injector seals that age badly and incomplete particulate filter regenerations on short journeys can let unburnt diesel into the sump, diluting the oil and leaving the engine with less lubrication.
- High severityFrequency: CommonOM642Wear and failure of the Bosch piezo injectorsThe OM642's Bosch piezo injectors can fail from around 150,000-200,000 km, especially with poor-quality diesel; they cannot be repaired, only replaced. Because it is a V engine, those on the rear bank are harder to reach, which pushes up labour costs.Repair: €4,500–€6,500
- High severityFrequency: Common2.2 CDI (OM646)Injector seal leak with carbonisation around the seatYes: the copper washer that seals each injector can harden and let combustion gases through, forming a black crust of carbon around it. It is a known fault on Mercedes CDI diesels of this era, with injectors described as fragile on both the OM611 and the OM646.
- High severityFrequency: Common2.2/2.5 dCiInjection pump or injector failureThe 2.2 dCi's common rail injectors fail fairly often on the X-Trail and Almera, with cases of seizing and leaks; on the Almera with the older YD22DDT, the documented fault is in the injection pump electronics, not the injectors.
