VR6 engine: faults and reliability

Volkswagen VR6 (2.8, 2.9, 3.2 and 3.6 FSI) · Volkswagen, Seat, Škoda, Audi, Porsche and Ford

Its best-documented faults are the timing chain, with tensioners on the 12-valve versions and stretching on the 3.2 (R32, A3 8P, TT, Cayenne), and, to a lesser extent, the cooling system of the 12-valve versions. The 3.6 FSI comes out of the sources better than the 3.2.[1][2][3]

Which VR6 versions should you buy?

Our verdict for each version, based on the documented faults.

  • 2.8 VR6 12V 140-174 hp (AAA, AMY, AES; 1991-2000)

    1991–2000 · 140–174 hp · AAA, AMY, AES

    With caution

AutoBild identifies the chain tensioners as the main technical problem of the Golf III VR6 and cites the water pump, thermostat and clutch among the points that fail most; fiches-auto.fr advises watching the chain and tensioners, cooling and ignition.[1][7]

  • 2.9 VR6 12V 190 hp (ABV; 1994-1997)

    1994–1997 · 190 hp · ABV

    With caution

AutoBild treats the chain tensioners as the weak point of both Golf III VR6s (2.8 and 2.9) and adds that the 2.9's clutch is not especially durable.[1]

  • 2.8 V6 24V 204 hp (AQP, AUE, BDE, AMV, AYL; 1999-2008)

1999–2008 · 204 hp · AQP, AUE, BDE, AMV, AYL

    With caution

Gebrauchtwagenberater rates the Golf IV's 2.8 V6 as an engine with no known problems, but cites the chain as a typical weak point of the León I's 2.8 V6 and mentions occasional stretching in the Bora's VR5 and VR6.[2][8][9]

  • 3.2 VR6 220-250 hp (BFH, BML, BDB, BMJ, BUB, BHE, BDL, BKK, AZZ, AXZ, CBRA; 2001-2010)

2001–2010 · 220–250 hp · BFH, BML, BDB, BMJ, BUB, BHE, BDL, BKK, AZZ, AXZ, CBRA

    With caution

Gebrauchtwagenberater and Carwiki record chain stretching on the Golf IV 3.2; AutoScout24 extends it to the Cayenne, the A3 8P 3.2 and the Golf V R32, and Carwiki to the TT 8N. Buy only with the chain checked.[2][3][10][11]

  • 3.6 VR6 FSI 249-300 hp (BLV, BWS, CDVA, CCZB, CNNA, CMTA; 2005-2018)

2005–2018 · 249–300 hp · BLV, BWS, CDVA, CCZB, CNNA, CMTA

    With caution

AutoScout24 advises the 3.6 FSI over the 3.2 in the Cayenne, and Gebrauchtwagenberater calls it a solid engine in the Passat CC; however, Carwiki cites the chain on the petrol V6s of the Cayenne 958, and fiches-auto.fr records a chain tensioner replaced on a Passat 3.6 at around 200,000 km.[3][12][13][14]

Buy: No known serious faults, or they have already been corrected, in this version. With caution: Worth buying if something specific is verified: history, a replaced part or a completed campaign. Avoid: High risk of a serious fault that is hard to check for or prevent.

What the VR6 is

The VR6 is a Volkswagen six-cylinder with a very narrow V (about 15° according to Wikipedia) and a long stroke to save width, designed to be mounted transversely. It was presented at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show and debuted in the Passat B3 and the Corrado.[4][5]

The first ones are 12-valve engines: the 2.8 with 174 hp (AAA, from 1991) and the 2.9 with 190 hp (ABV, from 1994, in the Golf III Syncro). The Transporter T4 uses it with 140 hp (AES), and the Sharan and the Galaxy with the codes AAA and AMY.[4][15][16][17]

From 1999 come the 24-valve versions, with separate intake and exhaust camshafts (EA390 family): the 2.8 with 204 hp (AQP, AUE, BDE), the 3.2 with 220 to 250 hp (the R32 is from 2002) and the 3.6 FSI direct-injection engine (from 2005, 260-300 hp).[4][6][18]

Besides the Golf, Bora, Passat, Sharan, Touareg, Phaeton, Eos and Transporter, it was also fitted to the Seat León I and Alhambra, the Škoda Superb II, the Audi A3 8P, TT and Q7, the Porsche Cayenne and the Ford Galaxy I. The Wikipedia article gives production as ending at the end of 2024.[4][5]
