1.2 12V vs VR6: which engine is more reliable?

According to our risk index, the VR6 carries less risk than the 1.2 12V: 50/100 versus 57/100 (both high risk). The 1.2 12V has 2 documented serious faults, the main one being «Timing chain stretch and tensioner wear»; the VR6 has 1 documented serious fault, the main one being «VR6 timing chain and tensioners».

Is the 1.2 12V reliable?

The 1.2 12V is a simple, low-power, naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine (54-70 hp), with two documented design faults: the timing chain tensioner, which can end up destroying the engine, and -on the Volkswagen Polo IV- a catalytic converter too close to the cylinder head that can burn the exhaust valves. Ignition coil failures are also common, and there are isolated cases of oil consumption and vibration.[1][2][3][4][5]

Is the VR6 reliable?

Its best-documented faults are the timing chain, with tensioners on the 12-valve versions and stretching on the 3.2 (R32, A3 8P, TT, Cayenne), and, to a lesser extent, the cooling system of the 12-valve versions. The 3.6 FSI comes out of the sources better than the 3.2.[6][7][8]
