2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) vs 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (GD): which engine is more reliable?

According to our risk index, the 2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) carries less risk than the 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (GD): 14/100 versus 20/100 (both low risk). The 2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) has 1 documented serious fault, the main one being «Unvulcanised fuel return pipe: fuel leak and fire risk»; the 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (GD) has no documented serious faults.

Is the 2.2 MultiJet / BlueHDi (Stellantis) reliable?

The 2.2 diesels of Stellantis's large vans (BlueHDi DW12 in the Boxer, Jumper and Movano; Multijet 3 in the Ducato) are recent engines with no fault statistics of their own. What is documented are campaigns: AdBlue and SCR software, and the fuel return pipe on 2024-2025 units, with a fire risk. Long-term history is missing.[1][2][3][4][5]

Is the 2.4 / 2.8 D-4D (GD) reliable?

No serious mechanical faults are documented in the European sources we were able to open: AutoBild saw the 2.8 as more robust than the 3.0 it replaced, although it points to glow plugs that fail early. Its best-documented weak point is the particulate filter, with a lawsuit in Australia but no equivalent recall or legal action in Europe, and there are barely any high-mileage examples from which to judge long-term reliability.[6][7][8]

  1. High severity: Unvulcanised fuel return pipe: fuel leak and fire risk
  2. Low severity: AdBlue (SCR) system: the warning light may not come on if the urea doser fails
  1. Medium severity: Blocked particulate filter (DPF) due to incomplete regenerations
  2. Medium severity: Variable geometry turbo (VNT) seized by soot
  3. Medium severity: Diesel dilution of the engine oil from interrupted particulate filter regenerations
