Is the BMW M57 reliable?

The BMW M57 (1998-2010) is a six-cylinder diesel with a reputation for great mechanical longevity, capable of exceeding 500,000 km when well maintained, but a good share of the versions built before 2008 -especially with an automatic gearbox- have metal swirl flaps in the intake that can break and wreck the engine; check whether the car has them and what condition they are in before buying.[1][2][3]

Is the 1.4 D-4D reliable?

Yes, generally: the 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV) is one of Toyota's most widespread small diesels, with a reputation for reasonable reliability. The documented weak points are the injectors, the turbo, the EGR valve, the diesel particulate filter (on versions that have one) and the clutch and dual-mass flywheel assembly, with cases spread between 2002 and 2018 across the Yaris, Corolla, Auris, Urban Cruiser, Verso-S and MINI One D.[4][5][6][7][8]
